Mille lacs Fishing Report 11-04-06

The walleye bite on mille lacs continues to be good. Fishing with me tonite were IDA members Jack and Senkoking a.k.a Randy Schauer both are also members of the Minnesota Valley In-fisherman club. Tonight’s goal was to swing for the fences and hope for a 30 inch walleye… But the first fish of the night was a 36 inch 15 pound + pike.

The area we targeted was Indian Point and the spine that runs west- east off Rainbow Island. With the water temps below 40 degrees, I knew the Tulipee had to be spawning and this was going to be a good night. Light to almost no wind and mild temps made the Nov full moon bite very comfortable.

We boated 15 fish, the smallest was 25 inches and the largest was Randy’s fat 28 incher that probably went 9 pounds, his personal best. I believe half our fish were 27- 27 1/2 inches. The hot baits were Salmo Whitefish in the Greentiger pattern, the Salmo Perch in the Perch pattern and Lazer Craw Rouges. We lost three baits on three enormous fish, probably pike or muskie. The tulipee were up on top of the spine as expected and trolling speeds varied from 1.3 mph to 1.5 mph. I figured if we could get the fish to go at that speed, we could cover more water and have better boat control when working the breaks of the spine. The walleyes were crushing our baits at these speeds. I did pull some muskie baits hoping to tap that 30 inch walleye but I had no takers.

The fish were not really concentrated in certain areas, just scattered. Just keep moving until you connect. Cover lots of water.

Jack got into some dandy fish and also snagged two tulipee. Randy and Jack were great company and the trip was a blast. I do have an opening tonite if anyone is interested. Call me at 763-221-3616. If your planning on going up yourself , pick up some Salmos….

Time for bed, the sun will be rising soon.

  1. Derek,

Thank-you for the great night on the water. The conditions could not have been better, mild temps, light winds, and 1 day before the full moon, Well I think we could have used a little more wind coming in. But from what central MN has had to put up with in the way for weather for the last month, it was a wonderful night.

Derek, had us try some of his new Salmo lures that had not been wet yet, and we got a couple of excellent 27 inch class Walleyes on them, til we were bit off by toothy critters.

Derek the night was very enjoyable, and quite a learning experience for Randy and I. Hope to be able to make it up before the conditions get too unbearable, would sure like to crack the 30″ barrier.

The fish population seems very healthy, and every fish was very fat and solid, and looking great for moving into the winter season.

If anyone is looking to REALLY learn Mille Lacs Fall Walleye patterns, and score some great fish. I strongly recomment Derek. His many years of experience on ML are evident. You can learn technigues and patterns you can use the rest of your life and really enjoy what this great lake has to offer.

Thanks again Derek for our night, and Thanks Randy for asking me to join you for this trip.

Randy, and CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN on your personal best Walleye, a measured 28 inches, a very fat, and a solid 9 pounder- WOW GREAT FISH…

(I had brain damage yesterday, and totally forgot MY camera, so can not add any of my own pics).

    Awesome….

    Jack..

Looks like the same fish to me……..

Its common for people that don’t see these type of fish often, to not be able to tell the difference.

    bigcrappie,
not sure how serious you are about the fish and the pics, but 15 Walleyes with seriously, the smallest Walleye is a measured 25 inches, is pretty amazing….
DO give Derek a call, take a friend to share the expenses, and check it out.
Don’t wait for the water to get much colder..
and I have to say, don’t forget your camera…
and have fun.. we sure DID..
    Jack..

  4. Well I did make it up there last night (Sunday) and it was too windy for my electric out on Indian Point. I tried it for a while and then decided to duck back down the shoreline out of the wind. Couldn’t buy a fish shallow. Then managed to pick up my personal best this year a 26.5″ in 13′ on a blue chrome deep thunderstick jr. I picked up a couple of 14″ers in the same area and called it a night.
Lots of boats on Indian point hardly any back towards the landing. I’ll try to put up a pic of the bigger fish.

  5. Derek,

Thank you for an outstanding night of fishing! The moon was full, the weather was great and the fish were pounding our crank baits. What more do we need out of life? I sure do enjoy these large walleyes slamming your crank baits so hard they stop it on a dime. As I believe to be called a bass guy for many years, this fall bite on Mille Lacs may convert me back to when all I did is fish for walleyes! Between Mille Lacs and Pool 4 I belive we have the two best fish producing bodies of water in Minnesota and at this time of year they are producing some quality fish. I would highly recommend getting up to Mille Lacs and trying your luck at a trophy walleye. If you want a chance at a true trophy I would recommend taking a trip on Mille Lacs with Derek soon. Thank you Derek for putting me on my two largest walleyes I have ever caught! Hopefully next year we can catch one that is about a half inch longer and have jack mount it for the wall. Thank you very much and I look forward to seeing you at our meeting in a couple of weeks.

  6. Derek
Did not see you this weekend. Where did you go out of? We had a great weekend. I can’t seem to find a way to post my report, so if you would could you copy and paste it from my web site for me?
    Thanks
    Rock

  7. Rockman,
Welcome to IDA, and for making your first post.
We went out of the Casino ramp, but you have to be extremely careful because of the shallow water, keep the motor way up and go slow.
we would have used Eddy’s ramp, but they were dredging their little harbor so their ramp was closed, am sure it would be back open when they are done.
As far as posting your report, this forum “Fishing Reports” can only be used by IDA staff persons. You can make comments or questions to posted reports, just can not make original reports.

  8. Just kidding, can we take a joke? I was up Saturday also and got 34 fish over the 25″ mark with many 26, 27 and 2 that hit the tape over 28″, 4 slimmers, one that was just under 20lbs and 2 breaks offs on 14lb fireline. And one double.
    First double
    28″

Wow.. What time did you fish from?

  10. Derek, Great report. We ended up with 18 with most between 26 and 28, one at 28.5 and a sumo 29! What a beautiful night it was.
