Mississippi River Pool 8 Crappies

The crappie bite was very steady for my Dad and I. We haven’t been in a boat together for a couple years, since my parents moved to Florida. We had a great time jawing and being together, and the crappie bite just added frosting!

Before I could get tied up Dad had a gill to the boat. Not what we were looking for but it sure happened fast. We found a few gills in the mix, but the majority of our fish were nice crappies. These fish were hanging around submerged wood in 16FOW. We were using a plain #8 gold hook and split shot, hanging a minnow 6 feet under a slip bobber. Over cast skies, a slight breeze with cool temps, and a hot bite!

We kept a total of 23 fish, did I forget to mention it has been awhile since we have had a fish fry with the whole family.

The crappies also like the minnow with some action. Casting and twitching the minnow over the wood helped to trigger the bite. I wouldn’t say they slammed the minnow; you had to let them have it until the bobber was completely gone.

We fished from 3pm until a little after 6 and head for home. We couldn’t have timed it any better. As we were leaving the landing it just started to rain. I know dad didn’t need to get wet, I’m sure the cool weather was enough of a shock as it was. We are hoping for one more break in the weather so when they head back south they can take some filets with them! I sure had a blast dad. Love you both!!

  1. Bret-You are an awesome guide I am very glad to see you were able to get out with your Dad and have a great time
I have no doubt your parents will have a nice bag of fillets to take back with them with your knowledge of the area

  2. Bret,
Are you marking those suspended fish on your sonar??? If so, are they in a “blob” on the screen or do you mark individual fish?

  3. Nice slabs Bret. I may go after a few of those this weekend on 11 if the walleyes don’t cooperate. Thanks for the report!

  4. Thanks guys.

Just to follow up, we woke up to a steady rain thinking it was going to be a bummer day. After checking out the radar and seeing a break in the rain headed our way there was a feeling of hope At 11am there was a window of opportunity so Dad and I headed back to pool 8. Different day, different submerged wood but still a good bite using the same technique.

Crappie fries headed to Florida for Mom and Dad….25 dollar Non Resident License.

Another day in the boat slamming crappies with my Father……priceless
