Mississippi River Pool 7 Bass Fishing Report

For some time, My wife Stacey and I have been planning a day off from work to go do whatever we thought would be fun. I was a little shocked when Stacey said she wanted to go fishing.

After taking the kids to daycare, we made our way to the gas station who sells licenses and got Stacey her fishing license. Shortly thereafter, we were on the water hoping to find a big school of Striped Bass. They’ve been biting well and I thought for sure we’d find a spot for a fun-filled day. I had no idea what would happen next…

After arriving at our first spot, I tied a Pop-R to one of my favorite St Croix spinning rods and it handed her. After fishing most of the wingdam and not catching much, Stacey said to me “I really don’t care for this rod much…” Not knowing what to say,(because who doesn’t like a 6′ 8" Croix with a Symetre reel?) I looked around the boat and all I saw was 7ft rods with Curado baitcasters.

With cautious optimism I tied a lipless crank to one of my Bass rods and let Stacey cast it out knowing full well that lipless crank was heavy enough to cast itself without much hassle.

The first cast….not too bad, about 10yds and no backlash. Second cast….a doozy! About 30yds perfectly placed riffle of the wingdam. I couldn’t ask for more! So I picked up my pole and started to cast the face of the wingdam with a topwater bait, all the while watching out of the corner of my eye for something to happen. About the 6th or 7th cast, I was watching Stacey fish and I saw her rod jump and I thought, “that looked like a strike.” Sure enough it was! She hooked a beauty LM Bass, the one in the first picture. “WOW!!” Stacey said “That was fun! Let’s do that again!!” I thought “Yeah, but let’s see that it happens on my pole…”

2 casts later I hear “Ohh OHH!! I have another one!” Into the net it came, another nice LM Bass. Now she has me down 2-0. Now I’m thinking “Game On!” I wanted to get in on that action.

About 3 fish later, I finally boated a decent fish. So now Stacey’s got me down 5-1. I’m supposed to be the guy showing her how to fish.

All these fish were caught on lipless cranks fishing both sides of the wingdam. In most cases the bigger fish were on the bottom side of the wingdam. Stacey caught all her fish casting over the top of the dam into the deeper water, bringing the crank up and over the rocks. It worked great for her. Not so well for me….

I was very proud of my wife for catching all those fish and for the way she was able to handle a baitcaster combo for the first time. We had a great day and Stacey even caught her first Northern Pike ever! Throughout the morning, she had me down 5-1 on two seperate occasions. I may have to fine tune my presentations.

It was a lot of fun. It’s pretty safe to say, I have a new fishing partner. She can buy her own St. Croix rods and Curado reels though….

  1. I thought I could by without her seeing me catch this hog, but I was mistaken.

Does that little guy look familiar Slop?

  2. Great report Blue
It is pretty bad when your wife can cast better than I can I think a couple of those fish look familiar

  3. Nice report! Way to go Mrs. Blue Fleck!!

Tom, if you’re going to take your wife fishing more often, get used to being outfished. It’s the way the fishing gods keep us humble I guess.

  4. Nice Job Mrs. Blue!
Don’t worry about Tom judging from some of the other video’s on the site, he seems pretty comfortable as “Net Boy”

A day spent with your better half doing what you love.
Count your blessings you could have spent the day at the mall. Iam sure if you had to get out fished you couldnt think of any one eles you would rather do it Nice report both on fishing an family

  7. Way to go Stacey. Great report and story Blue. Yep, you now have a new fishing partner. Maybe even a new tournament partner as it pretty hard to turn down a partner who catching 5 to your 1. Shes a keeper.
    Thanks, Bill

  8. She’s hooked now Tom. Might as well turn all your tackle over to her. All you’ll need in your hand is the net.

Nice job Stacey : way to go:
