Branched Oak Full Moon Report 9-6-06

It was another beautiful early fall day in Nebraska yesterday. One of those days you would regret not going fishing. I got off work early and headed home to get the boat. It was also the night before the full moon and I wanted to see if I could get into the middle of a full moon walleye feeding frenzy.

I stopped and picked up my cousin Pete in Lincoln and this time we decided to have his dad join us. We got on the water around 5:00 and started trolling. Once again we were using the new Berkley Flicker Shads. I just can’t seem to pull myself away from this bait lately. I bought over 30 of them and when I get the chance I think I’ll get 30 more.

We started out trolling one of our favorite areas with no luck. We kept a close eye on the electronics because there were shad everywhere. At times it looked as if the water was boiling around us. We knew there were some nice wipers in the area that were pushing these shad to the surface. We just have a hard time bringing ourselves to fish for wipers. They are a ton of fun, but we are true walleye guys at heart, so we decided to keep our baits below them. This lake is known for its big walleye but they are nearly impossible to catch. With out of control populations of white perch and shad the walleye never run low on plenty to eat. They like to hide under the big feeding frenzy of the wipers waiting for injured shad or white perch to come floating down to them.

After a couple hours went by without a single fish we were begining to wonder if we shouldn’t target some of the feeding wipers. Instead we stuck with what we were doing and it finally paid off. It was the only fish of the evening but it was a beautiful and healthy 28 1/2 inch walleye. The Berkley Flicker Shad strikes again!!!

We continued the same pattern into the evening untill we noticed the shad being pushed up into shallow water. We then shortened up our lines and moved in closer hoping to find some walleye that did the same. We stuck it out untill 11:30 with no more luck and decided to call it a night. It was a great night with clear skies and an almost full moon. I will certainly look forward to another fall full moon at Branched Oak, but it will have to be in November. I will be spending my full moon next month at Mille Lacs in Minnesota for the legendary fall full moon walleye bite. I can’t wait!!

  5. Glad to hear you took an old man fishing with you and Pete. I wonder if you’d ever consider taking another? Not sure I’d be patient to wait for just one fish, even if it was a beauty, when others are hungry. I agree, let’s fish 2 days and work 5, but my wife won’t let me.
