Iowa River Fishing Report

It has been a while since the Iowa boys have posted a fishing report, so here we are.

Andy, Trevor and I met up on the Iowa river to chase some walleyes. Our game plan was to wade from the bank and cast 3/32 ounce BFT jigs rigged with 2" twisters. Read on to find out how we did!

We ended up catching five nice Iowa river size walleyes, a good number of crappies, and a few nice whitebass. Trevor even caught a few nice bluegills. Chartruese proved to be the best color, but a few fish also fell victom to a blue/white shad body plastic. We were using St.Croix spinning rods in 6’6" medium action, paired with a spinning reel, and superline. The sensitive rod, and superline played an important role in catching many of the fish. A few of the walleyes hit very aggresively, while the others bairly picked up the bait.

Seeing as how I haven’t fished at all in the last month, I self appointed myself as the official camera man. It had nothing to do with the fact that I didn’t catch many fish!! Andy and Trevor kept me busy wading from one to the other snapping photos. I was making my way to Trevor, as he was holding the nicest walleye of the night, and the fish did not want his picture taken, and evaded trevor’s grip. I guess I wasn’t quick enough!!

The areas we were targeting were faster water areas with slower current adjacent to it. Also combined with rock to sand transitions. The walleyes were in deeper water, and the whitebass, crappies, and bluegills were in shallower water areas.

Iowa area rivers should only be getting better from here on out. With as many fish species as we caught, there is an abundance of fish around. I can’t wait for ice, but there is plenty of great fall fishing ahead. Make sure to make some time, and get out in this beautiful weather and enjoy fishing. There are so many spots to fish, and a boat isn’t even needed!! Stay safe, good luck, and we’ll see you on the water!!

All fish were released!!

  1. Nice report Luke. I got out this weekend on the Iowa as well, but all I could find were northerns. They are a fun fish to catch though. I posted a report but I still cant figure out how to load pics.

  2. Ive been having the same luck Luke, fishing in faster water or near by was the key. Not big walleyes, 16″, but they were there. Crappies, that just shows the rivers healthy.

  3. It is good to see you get out and enjoy some fun time again. That working 60 hours a week is for the birds

    Attaboy Luke!

Attaboy!! I am taking that as you like my camera skills huh?…lol!
Andy and Trevor were on it tonight!

Nick- that is good, I would like to catch some of those- they usually don’t make it as far south (in that part of the river) where we were fishing. But below the tube you can catch a lot of them. If you want Nick- email your pics to me, and I can get them posted, and I will try and dig up a tutorial on posting photos.

Mossy are you fishing up near CR?

Yeah, I hear you Mike…..them dang birds!!

  5. North of here Luke. I’ve been hitting the maquoketa and wapsi. That area i told you about up by pictured rock is about fished out for the bigger more aggresive smallmouths that come up river in spring, lots of canoers there so i haven’t been back but im sure theres a few walleyes there. When fall rolls around its really pretty there and its worth going after them then. I’ve been fishing the smaller rivers because they have been cooling down faster from around central city north to manchester. Ive been down to the rollerdam here but just small smallmouths, alot of sheepheads on crawlers. Fishings picking up with the cooling temps. How about this low clear water, its pretty nice and i hope it dosen’t cloud up much until ice.

  6. luke just wondering, your from around the Desmoines area and fishing around the desmoines area. These picture’s show a filmilar setting. Just curious, Glad your finding the eye’s, If you give me some info where about’s your at, Maybe I can give you some hints of other place’s. if i’m correct it’s Altoona.

  7. Crappie-

I am from Iowa City/Cedar Rapids area. I do do some fishing in the altoona area though, we work sometimes over at the magellan terminal in Pleasant Valley.

We were fishing near Iowa City. I have a few spots that I love near altoona!!

  8. Hey thanks for reply,
It looks just like a spot here in des moines right down from a tub on the river here, So i went tonight and the smallies were all over, every cast. No eye’s hanging around,But those big crappies you were asking about should be coming in the next month at Red rock. I’ll keep in touch, It was okay, I found a cell phone case and it had a inhaler in it. So I called the guys brother(his # not listed) and got it back to him, just lost it last night out fishing. So not all that bad, got to do that good deed for the day.
    keep getting the eye’s
