Lake Zumbro Is Still Putting Out Bullgills

Looking for a place to satisfy your fishing itch that just needs to be scratched? Well Lake Zumbro which is just north of Rochester will satisfy your need of a fishing fix with some nice bullgills.

The fish were found shallow mostly and docks seem to be the place to find them. The minnows and other fish food are attracted to the nice green salad that you find attached to the docks by the end of summer and that calls the fish in for a meal.

The tools for today were a 6’6” St. Croix Avid light action fast tip spinning rod with an Okuma reel. A Mini-Mite jig with a waxie was at the business end of the line along with a small float to keep the offering at the right depth that the fish wanted.

This is the time of year that we get to have our cake and eat it too. We have nice temps that aren’t too hot and the water temps start to drop some which will mean better fishing for us all. Just gotta love the late summer/fall time of year. Yes I know, where did summer go as its flied right past us. But fall brings improved fishing for us all so be sure and get out on the water and enjoy the fishing. You will be glad you did.

Thanks, Bill

  1. Hey Bill, all that knowledge and experience out on Zumbro you could be the next full time guide out there!! Good report as usual I hit the water last night just after dark with a good friend of mine in an attempt to catch a muskie. He is the musky fisherman, so at least one of us had a clue what we were doing. It didnt take him too much to convince me, as I just got a 1900 pro v ifs and got it all rigged up yesterday. So needless to say I would have went fly fishing last night if someone would have asked Well we didnt get wet out there but we managed to do some lure washing, no fish to speak of. Oh well weather was beautiful, and no holiday boat traffic to beat us up that time of night. Left the water at about 1230 am. Any idea if there are any good numbers of muskie in Zumbro?

  2. I haven’t seen or heard of alot of muskies but there are some in there. There are alot more nice northerns in there from what I’ve heard and seen though. Big bays and weedlines are where they seem to be. Very sweet boat you have there.
    Thanks, Bill

  3. Nice gills Bill I might have to give that lake a look during the hard water season

  4. Hey Bill, nice report! The bite has been getting really good out there! Is there any way for me to get a forum for Lake Zumbro going on here? I see alot of other MN lakes and rivers but no Zumbro. I fish the Zumbro pretty much every week and would like to post my weekly reports on here for others to see. Any help would be appreciated!

    Nice Gills!!
