The high water that caused the ”no wake” on Lake Zumbro sure didn’t slow the fish down any as they were speeding to see who could jump in the boat first it seemed. Read on to see how much fun these fishergals were having.
Even though we were after stripers today so these gals could have a hay day catching them we just had to make a couple passes through a crappie area and Brianna hooked into this one right away. Crappies are always fun to catch so it always great to see they are hungry.
Now lets get down to the business of catching stripers. I’m a tiller man at heart so a no wake on the lake puts me in the back of the boat the whole time running the kicker motor which is what I love to do. We were trolling Roostertail spinners from HOF. The flash from the blade attracts the fish and there are different colors on the spinners you can use to see which color the fish want most once the fish get closer to the lure. They will tell you which color is the hottest.
Theres nothing more exciting than seeing the smiles on kids faces as they crank in fish after fish. You see the excitement in their eyes as they watch the water where the fish will be coming up to the top. You see the gleam in their eyes as they picture a monster fish in their minds as its fighting and they are cranking hard to bring it in. Then all of a sudden they hollar there he is as its gets close to the boat. You help them get the fish in the boat and after you remove the hooks from the fish the girls want to touch the fish as each fish is very special and they pick a name for each one. Then the fish goes back in the water so he can be caught again. The high water-hot bite-happy kids all touch a special place in your heart when you see them having so much fun. This is a great time to take kids fishing as the bite is on and it keeps them interested. The gals are 3 of my grandaughters and this was a hot bite I just had to share them. It makes wonderfull memories and makes a person understand the real joy of fishing is being able to share the moments, the fish, the fun, the excitement with someone special. Please don’t hesitate to take some kids fishing. It is something that is close to our hearts that we can share and pass on to others so they may enjoy being on the water too. Its only 12 1/2 miles from my house to the boat launch at the Ponderosa Campground. Too close and too good to pass up.
The grandkids love to fish out of the boat and with the bite being hot a person just has to get down there. I kind of rotate between Lake Zumbro and the pool 4 of the Mississippi River. Will be at the river the middle of the month for a little 4 day vacation with my youngest son Nate and his fishing partner Ricky Young while they prefish for the MWC Tournament there but right now its the hot striper bite thats ALOT of fun. Its really nice to just get back to basics and enjoy whats biting instead of just chasing walleyes all the time. I was away from Zumbro for too long and have really enjoyed the relaxing fishing Zumbro has to offer. And being so close to Rochester its really inexpensive to fish which means alot more fishing for this guy.

White Bass and Crappies are a great way to get kids involved in fishing. Especially when the bite is hot. They never have time to get bored before another fish is on the end of the line.
