I had the opportunity to spend the last few days fishing with my dad and wife on Lake Michigan. We do this yearly fishing with Dick, an old co-worker of my dad’s, and Gary aboard the Jester. The reports that Gary and Dick had been giving us the last couple weeks were great and we had high hopes on the drive over. The first day out was a little rough and dad and Beck both got a case of motion sickness in short order. We decided to pull the lines in and call it a day when this big girl hit. It delayed our return to the docks by 30 minutes, but battling this 24lb fish was great!
That night while at the hotel, we happened to catch an episode of Mythbusters and one of the things they were looking at was motion sickness. 2 things that seemed to work was ginger tablets and Dramamine. They both took doses of each the following day. Dad felt fine, but Beck was still a little queasy from the day before, but she lasted until the end. We got our limit in the boat, and lost many others. The first big one I lost was a fish Beck handed off to me after fighting it for 10+ minutes. It made a run at the boat and broke off when the line hit a downrigger cable. The 2nd big one I lost came off as the fish was passing the boat.
Our fish came mainly on down riggers 80-100′ down over 160′. Dodgers and flies were the ticket by far. A big thanks goes out to Gary and Dick for another great trip. These guys have been on big fish a lot lately. They caught the largest king during the Two Rivers derby.
Nice fish Mike. Looks like a very fun time fishing once the motion sickness was taken care of. Thanks for the report and pics.
Thanks, Bill
That biggun sounds like a good time Mike.
were did you launch out of in lake michigan???
Manitowoc is where they keep the boat. We stayed at the Best Western which was walking distance to the marina as well as the Maritime musuem and a restored sub the USS Cobia.
Hey Mike you were in my old stomping grounds. I grew up fishing those piers and the beach before the marina was ever built. I was back twice this summer for a little lake fun but never got any big pigs. I did take 6th place in the Manty Derby with a 9#+ Laker. Always a good time.
I have always wanted to try that someday. Cool report Mike.
Thanks Mike!
Your report brought back some good memories as I had the pleasure of fishing Manitowoc/Two Rivers a few times in the 90’s. It is amazing how much fight those babys can put up, especially when coming up from deep water.

we always launch out of waukegan it is about 1/2 hour south of racine in ill.
Nice fish there Mike. I really like going over to Lake Mich and catching those line ripping screamers. There is just something about fighting a fish that takes you 30 to 45 min to land (if you land it). I just stated going over their last year (Algoma) and that is about the only place I’m fishing lately. We just got back last Friday after spending a week and our largest was 21 1/2 pounds. I’ll try and post a photo later. Can’t wait to get over there again. Nice report.

The good bite off Manitowoc continues. My son and I were out for only two hours and we had 10 kings between 6-28 lbss. We decided to stay in close and work the 4 year olds. They haven’t turned too dark yet as we ate the smallest one for lunch today and it was great. We used our walleye gear and pulled Reef Runners, Deep Kaboom Shiners, and small spoons behind dipsey divers. We never went out further than 300 yards off shore. The guys on both piers were nailing them too. Now’s the time if you want to get in on some great salmon fishing!!
