August is known for being the month for catching alot of Stripers [whitebass] and it is ”Stripper Madness” on Lake Zumbro near Rochester, Mn. If you want to get someone ”Hooked On Fishing” now is the time to be on the water.
Monday evening my youngest grandson Mitchell ”Hot Stick” Severson and I hit the lake in search for the schools of stripers and it didn’t take long to start catching fish after fish.
Last year those large schools of 4-5 inch stripers are now 9-10 inches long. And for a 6 year old angler they were a ton of fun reeling in fish after fish. In the 2 1/4 hours we fished for them we caught easily over 50 fish.
The technique we used was trolling with the kicker motor, using St. Croix spinning rods in the med. light action with the lures being Roostertail inline spinners from HOF. The hot colors were green and also orange both with a gold spinner on them. Now is the time to hit the water for a very fun filled day of ”catching.” Kids love catching them no matter how young or old we are.

He was a VERY busy boy John. I think I reeled in maybe two fish and had him reel in all the rest no matter whose rod they hit. He was a very excited boy out there.
Taking kids fishing not only gets them ”hookerd on fishing” but also helps to be sure there are future fisherpeople coming up to fill our shoes someday. I have alot of grandkids that love to go fishing so they keep me busy [which is great] as its a great way to spend time with family. If anyone out there doesn’t have any kids of their own to take fishing then try taking the neighbor kids or a friends kids. You will have a great time and won’t be able to wait til the next time.

Nothing better than watching the kids catch fish!! Just fun to drive the boat and let them have all the fish, although it wont be long and they will take away the driving too

Looks like you had a fun day with the grandson!!! You are absolutely right, the stripers have been crazy up there for about 2-3 weeks now. It is a great opportunity to get people hooked on fishing!!
