Had a chance to get out on the water for the first time in a few weeks, and decided that Lake Zumbro was a good bet. I had been hearing that the fish were suspended over deep water. I found that to be true and false, depending on location.
The weather was much better than we have had for the past several days with the air temp a comfortable 81 degrees. The water temp was a bit warmer at 83 degrees. I looked for fish on my locator before putting a lure in the water. I starting marking fish suspended in the 8-12 ft. range over 15-20 FOW. I also found some fish near the bottom in 10-12 FOW.
The lure was my favorite mini-mite jigs tipped with a waxie. I went straight over the side of the boat down about 8 ft. Some of the bites were definate strikes, but most were just a little nibble or sudden added weight. Whenever I felt anything change – set the hook, and it was usually a fish.
I ended up catching a large amount of fish in the 3 hours I was out. Crappies up to 11 inches, bluegills up to 8 inches, and lots of white bass in the 9-11 inch range. The big carp were making their presence known with lots of splashing and there were also a lot of other fish surfacing while chasing bait fish. It was a great day to be on the water again! Hope you get a chance to get out and enjoy the fishing soon!
It’s about time you get out HOF!
No kidding! I thought you got into Bass fishing and were too ashamed to come out and play!
Sounds like the bite was a “take a kid fishing” type bite.
I don’t recall if I read it or if someone told me that channel cats follow mating carp around…might want to try some of the Sonny’s Super Sticky around those frowlicking carp.
Speaking of rumors…I heard you have a new catfishing display with everything a person needs for catten…and <gulp> a…bass fishing display??
Don’t worry Mike, if the last part IS true…I’ll stick by your side…(for a while)
Yep, looks like Mike sneaked out fishin again. I also heard the rumor that Mike has a catfish display and a bass fishing display with a bunch of goodies for us fishermen. Thanks for the report and pics Bud.
Thanks, Bill
found the same to be true tonight while fishing with my son,
mini-mite jigs and a small piece of worm did the trick, mostly gills with a couple pushing 9 1/2 inches, I found that fishing shallow 5 – 12 ft work good with a few nice perch in the bunch any deeper and whitebass were fairly consistant then.
Nice looking pics Mike you must have that new camera all figured out.
Mike,
Nice Report! Glad to see you’re getting a chance to get some fishing in
