Pool 14 Fishing Report 7-22-06

I finally got back to the river last Saturday with my buddy Trevor (twgohawks). We decided to give Pool 14 a try since there has been some decent reports from there lately and it’s close to Iowa City. We started off with this nice eye within the first 20 seconds of our first trolling pass… read on to see how the rest of the day went.

We got some good information from a lot of guys from this site like: Riverking, John Tucker, Eyehunter, and Todd Carnes. Thanks guys! We ended up with 8 keeper size walleyes and 1 sauger for our days effort – not bad, but we definately had to work for them. Here’s Trevor’s sauger caught in the same area as the first eye long-lining cranks in 8-12 fow in the “Albany flats” area.

We marked a lot of fish on the Lowrance and just kept trying to figure them out, but nothing seemed to work really well. We tried drifting with jigs/bait and got nothing. Trevor got one fish pulling spinner/crawler but we could hardly keep the big gills off us.

We finally went upstream above Little Rock Island and hit a couple wingdams with jigs/plastic and got 4 keeper fish. 1/2 oz jig with a Lindy Munchy worked well. The fish were relating to the tips of the dams in front and behind.

There were some awesome looking areas to fish on P14, but I think the fish were a little off – maybe because of the minor cold front we had. I look forward to getting back out and hopefully running into some of you Pool 14 guys!

  1. Nice report Andy. I am going to try real hard to get to the River this fall. Tomorrow Im leaving for Waubay for 5 days, Ill give a report when I get back.

  2. I am shocked anyone can catch anything on those munchies – the ones I have tried don’t move on the jig. No action – unlike ringworms – they look alive on the jigs… you’ll have to fill us in on the details. Chuckles

  3. Andy, great report! Those flats can really be feast or famine this time of year. Glad to hear you got into a few fish at least there! I am back in business and will be hitting 14 tommorrow, hopefully will add a follow up here or a new report. Let me know when you can make it again, I’ll point you to some less frequented spots!

  4. I guess I won’t need a new report for our results Sunday. My brother and I hit the river at 5 a.m., fished until noon, and had zero walleyes for the day. We found everything but eyes, mostly small flatheads and nice bluegills, along with a few sheepies, white bass, redtail suckers, and shad.
This was the first time all year that I have been skunded on eyes. Not sure if it was my poor fishing, the rising barometer, or the miserable heat, but the ‘eyes where not cooperating for us or anyone else we talked to on this day.
Baitfish everywhere. I think the summer slow down is in full swing with this prolonged heat wave and the growth of the bait fish. Looks like a good time to hit the honey-dos and get ready for fall fishing!!!
