Mille Lacs in mid July

The past three days on the pond left me scratching my head a little bit.

You learn to keep change going to find what triggers the bite. I feel now I was probably a few changes away yet from getting the fish going. We did run across some real nice fish but nothing consistent. The lake was lying pretty flat all weekend with lots of sunshine to go around. There was a pretty good amount of boats taking advantage of the flat water making runs out to the mud. Here is a shot I took Saturday afternoon out on the Boot flat.

Pulling boards and long lining cranks down 24-28 ft off the edges and even a couple 100 yards of the top of the flats seem to work the best for my boat. We graphed fish and bait all over out there, just getting them to go was another story. Just about every technique in the book was being used out there including bobber fishing, jigging, rigging and pulling.

If you looked around enough you could see nets coming out here and there with every set-up taking a fish when it was there turn. With the bait we looked to be competing against it was no wonder we couldn’t get anything consistent going, but you try never knowing what the next set-up will bring. We found reef runners to work the best for us and tail dancers took a few fish also.

There where tullipe floating everywhere on the lake. Not sure if it’s a cycle of nature or if the warm water is killing these off. A majority of these floating fish are pretty good size which makes me think it’s the weak elders dying off. I was pleased to discover only a few walleyes floating. In watching people release there fish it was nice to see them doing a good job at that. It’s tough on fish this time of year if you don’t take the right measures in getting them back in the water correctly. This second photo is John Schommer (Shrum) here on the site with a 26.5 we boated Saturday on a blue chrome reef runner.

Overall it was a great weekend up on Mille Lacs with fish being caught with nice weather, friends and good eats (Thanks to Hooks and Josh for the awesome fish fry)

Maybe Josh can post his success he had on Sunday as he did pretty well out there.

Good luck and we will see you on the water.
