My last couple of outings on the mighty river have been spent on pool 3. I have dedicated 100% of my time on this pool to the wing dams with very good results. Casting cranks to the tops of the dams has been very effective for me on the last couple of trips. With the flow on this pool next to nothing, the fish have been spread out all over the dams for the most part but on certain days the tips of the dams have been best for the bigger fish.
This past Sunday I shared my boat with Sean (LITTLE B)Lyons. Sean and I had a late start due to some good fun the night prior but made the best of the time once we hit the water. Sean and I both started casting cranks to the tops of the dams with some good results. Once the crank bite dwindled on the dam we were targeting I was slowing down and fishing bait, leeches, crawlers and willow cats to no avail. These big girls wanted cranks on this day. Best color cranks for me on the last couple of outing on this pool have been predominately crawfish patterns. I have taken some fish on firetiger as well. The 2 big eyes I put in the boat on Sundays outing actually came on fire tiger. Sean was casting a craw pattern and caught more fish than I did by the end of our outing. As you can tell from the first picture in this report of Sean, the bigger eye’s will eat the craw patterns as well. Sean had this big eye follow his crank right to the boat. Nice fish Sean . Sean is pictured below as well with another nice fish he boated in the 21“-22”class.
The two of us never boated a walleye past 2:00pm, did get some smallies though. I think the heavy weekend boat traffic that had come mid afternoon on this pool slowed the bite. Not really sure how the heavy boat traffic effects the walleye on this pool because I have not fished it enough in heavy traffic to know yet. By trips end we had close to a 2 man limit of walleye, (all released) with more than half our catch over the 20” mark . It was great to finally share my boat with you Sean. I am looking forward to doing it again sometime soon Now that Big B has the camper all shined up we can drag him and Lindy along next time…………. you and I will need a good net man/woman
Best cranks for my boat have been Bomber 6A’s, Fat Raps, Jointed Shad Raps and RS Shad Raps have taken a few eye’s as well but the Bombers have been the stuff for my boat. All of my fish have been coming right off the top of the wing dams in 2’ to 6’ of water. If the fish are there and feeding it doesn’t take long to get bit if throwing cranks. In most instances we are seeing fish on one of the first 3 casts if they are there. Once the bite slows head on to another dam and stop back later. The water clarity is still amazing on the upper part of the river for this time of year. I can see a bright colored jig or crank down about 15” right now.
I have not been out on Upper pool 4 since my last report. From the second hand info I have received the walleye bite has been slower than it was in weeks past but some nice fish are still being caught. Sounds like the numbers are on the lower side from what they have been.
See ya’ on the river!
Great job guys. I knew the fish were still there Sunday but I just couldn’t find them.
Great report Dustin!
dd
Cool report buddy.
Once you have a good milk run of dams setup how many spots would you say you are visiting in a day’s trip?
I love this kind of bite and so do cusotmers!!!
Nice dog days fish Dustin.
Steve,
Right now I am fishing 10-20 dams a day, depending on the bite. If the eye’s keep biting on one dam we will stay longer, on slower days we are fishing more dams.
You need to get your down here and fish with me
Great reoprt as usuall Dustin. Love2Fish
Awesome report Dustin. Let me know next time you’re heading down and don’t have a partner. I haven’t been down there since we were last out. Got pretty busy on Mille Lacs, weddings, vacation etc.
Bri
Nice report Dustin

I be that was a fun day on the water

Dustin,
Nice report as usual, but Pool 3 ????? Very Nice Walleyes!!!
Nice to see you getting off P4 some..
I really don’t think P3 gets any where near the pressure of P4, and there really IS some nice fish. I just have to get out more often.
Are there any good ramps in the southern part of the pool, or do you come up to Hastings or Prescott ???
Looking for more P3 reports.
thanks again.
Jack..
Dustin,
Thanks for sharing the boat and this pattern with me, I had a ball! Still recovering from that long weekend though. I always think I’m a Rockstar until it’s time to get up in the morning!
It was my pleasure Sean .
Jack, I have been locking up from pool 4 or using the Diamond Bluffs launch. I am not sure about ramps up from there. As far as I know, Prescott is the only other boat ramp that I know of.
Brian, I have an open seat tomorow if your game ?Give me a shout if you can make it
Hey there. I have an old Fishing Hot Spots book that speeks of a launch ramp at Diamond Bluff as being a sand ramp and need for a 4WD vehicle being necessary for using that launch site. Like I said, it’s an old edition and I’d like to know if that launch site is still sand or has it been upgraded to concrete? Thanks for the help. Backtroller II
Nope, She’s been upgraded. If you don’t want to be on the Wisc. side, There is also a pretty nice launch just down from the Casino (TI). That’s the one I use all the time.
Well thanks for the helpful information on the ramp at Diamond Bluff and the great fishing report. That Fishing Hot Spots book I mentioned earlier is a 1987 edition and it shows a launch ramp by the power plant out past where the casino would be and states that it is for Indian use only. Can I assume that’s changed also. That would be the best location to access Pool #3 from where I live but I want to make sure I can use it. Again, thanks for any help. Backtroller II
It is for everyone. The DNR just re-did it. Paved it and it has a nice dock too.
Still hammering ’em!
What are the directions to the ramp by the power plant? If you turn at the stop sign and then head toward the casino is the ramp a right turn after the RR tracks?
Hey Jr., go past the Casino and as the road starts to turn to the right, just before the road barriers, take a left. It’s gravel but only lasts a couple hundred yards. Then gows back into the woods and your there!
