Mille Lacs Lake fishing report 7-4-06

I enjoyed a very nice forth of July weekend. I included some camping, good food, good friends and of course some fishing. It was my pleasure to share my boat with two youth from Pierz,MN. Devaunte (12 yrs.) was experiencing his first walleye fishing on Mille Lacs Lake. He is pictured here with his first walleye and biggest walleye caught at 25 1/2 inches!! He was a very quick learner, catching on to pulling a crawler harness with a baitcasting reel trolled over the mud flats.

Devaunte and I fished the edges of a couple of flats that have been producing fish of late for this angler. We caught our fish working the edges in 27-30 fow.

We fished the mud flats for walleye and also found some time to go after some smallmouth bass. The conditions with the strong wind weren’t the best for smallies. Boat control was the biggest problem, while trying to keep two young fisherman on fish. Stoney (11yrs) is pictured with his brother Devaunte showing the big smiles holding a smallie caught on a B-Fish-N Gold Shine K-grub.

Devaunte even found time to take a picture of yours truly holding an over the slot Mille Lacs walleye. Most of our walleye caught this weekend were over the 20 inch slot. It was a blast seeing the smiles on these young men’s faces. I guess the old saying goes: the picture always tell’s the story!!

Great to see you getting those kids on some beauties. I bet they will be talking about that day to their kids.

That is what it is all about! Getting kids involved in this great life long sport of fishing and the outdoors!

  5. Great report Bob. I’ve spent many days recenly up there guiding as well. Same spinner bite for my boat got this 29.5″ for the wife.

  6. Way to go Bob I got to meet those kids and the rest of the family, very special! Carlson’s for showing them the great time

  7. More reports I see, the more I can’t wait for the fall bite in shallow water. It’s going to be an amazing year!!!

  8. Kooty, what is this shallow bite in the fall you talk about? Is it a top water bite, rigging bite or a corking bite? I would like to learn more about it. Is there many fish caught? Any decent size to them.

Mike, Congrats to the wife, that fish is a beauty. Good Job Captian!

  9. Can you imagine looking over the side of the boat with teh spot light and see that tank coming to the net??? Nice and fattened up for the long winter ahead. The hair just stood up on the back of my neck.

BTW, the bite is on chugger top water baits or the new clatter baits work well too.
