Lake Zumbro 4th of July Fishin Fun

I had the chance to fish with my oldest grandson Brandon from Hartford Wisconsin today so we headed to Lake Zumbro for some 4th of July weekend fun fishing. The technique that put fish in the boat the quickest was the o’l tried and true Mini-Mites with a waxie under a fixed float. Here is Brandon with one of those fish.

The mission for today was to catch a bunch of whitebass and hopefully big ones. Well we found the whitebass alright but the big ones did a very good job of hiding from us. I was way behind on the race for the most but I redeemed myself by us ending in a tie for who caught the most. Whew. lol. I didn’t take any pics of them as I was holding out for the bigs ones and I still holding. lol.

After trolling for the whitebass we tried casting for them and the size remained the same so we changed techniques and fish spieces so bluegills were on our minds. They were caught from several different locations with casting these setups to dock edges and sandy areas and Brandon mixed it up alittle with crappie and perch.

This was a special day for both of us as we don’t get to fish together with him living 275 miles away so a day in the boat together was a treat. Brandon is taking a fishing class as a summer school class and it has paid off. I give him an ”A” for today teacher in case you happen to read this. With the long weekend be sure and get out fishing and please take the time to take someone much younger than you fishing as I’m sure they will appreciate it. Have a very Happy and Safe 4th of July.

Thanks, Bill

  1. You know Tuck, believe it or not, I don’t eat fish. I was raised around boats and outboard motors but my Mom and Dad didn’t fish or eat fish. Dad had a big pleasure boat and a bunch of motors downstairs [Mom bought cigs and Dad bought outboard motors, lol] but no fishing. I loved running around with those small outboard motors on lakes and I think thats why I love pulling 3-ways and trolling so much as I get to run small outboard motors doing it.
    Thanks, Bill

  2. Looks great Bill, Sounds like a great day on the water

I think you may have a new fishing partner on your hands there. Thanks for the report

How was the boat traffic on the Zumbro? I was thinking about taking the wife fishing for a few hours, but don’t want a pregnant lady to roll in the boat from wakes all day. She may leave a mess on the floor

  3. The boat traffic is busy after 10:00 during the day on weekends. Evenings are best especially during the week. Wed nights there is a waterski show which attracts people. Congrats on the little one on the way. Either a boy or a girl can be taken fishing and get hooked so you will have a partner either way. My youngest son started at age two and he says his daughter is starting younger than that.
    Thanks, Bill
