Today was an excellent day to be on the water. The walleyes on mille lacs are still biting good and today they were grouped up nice. With excellent weather and manageable winds, we were able to catch fish all day long.
Joining me today was my good friend Jim. We got on the water around 9am after launching at the Red Door resort. Today’s agenda was to fish the mud flats on the north end of the lake with crawler/spinner rigs. The first flat we fished was East Flat. A large flat just a mile out from shore. We pulled a few fish from the top of the flat but boat traffic was getting busy so we headed out further to fish some of the no name flats.
We fished a flat just south east of East Flat that had no boats at all. There were a few fish on top but the edges of the flat were holding nice large tight groups of fish. Using hammered gold spinners, we back trolled along the edges and caught a mess of fish. We only had two fish over the slot today. We had 7 slots in the box by 11am and continued to catch and release fish until 2pm when we decided to take our last fish and head in.
The key today was staying on those edges. We saw a lot of people on the first flat we fished drifting the tops of the flats with leeches and having limited to no success. Get away from the crowds and spend a little time searching for the pods of fish on the mud edges. The fish were extremely aggressive today and really slamming the spinners hard. It was a great day and hope this coming week is the same..
Great Report again Derek. Spinners and mud, that is a great combo!!
Nice fish Derek. Sounds like fun and a great day weather wise to be on the water.
Thanks, Bill
Great report Derek I am wondering if me and a friend are fishing on mille lacs and we have seven walleye in the boat does one of us have to quit fishing?
No. But I’m not 100% sure on the by-laws. My understanding, since mille lacs is no cull, once you have 8 in the livewell you have to keep them and stop fishing for walleye.
Nice Report Derek!
Looks like a beautiful day to be on the water Derek.
Congrats on some nice fish and a nice report. Keep the reports coming!
Great report, putting away the muskie gear for atleast one day up there next Sunday through Tuesday to get some eyes in the boat with the little lady .
Derek, are spinners with night crawlers outfishing leeches with a 8 to 12 foot snell? Also, is anything happening on the south end? (Staying at Father Hennipen and in case too windy too run and gun). Thanks again for the report!!!
Chris
Thanks steve.
Chris, rigging is still working. But we caught over 30 fish on Sunday on spinners. I talked to three other boats that were drifting with long snells on the flats that had 1-3 fish. Sloppy Joes has been doing good with spinners.
Nice report Derek, sounds like the area (or similar to the area)I was fishing a week prior. While I cant report action that was that fast we were able to get some fish and not have to compete with the crowds on top of the flat. So while I am a novice at this I would echo your message of breaking away from the crowds and working some of the other flats (edges in particular)and you may be pleasantly surprised by the results. This will be among the areas I will work this weekend as we spend a few days up on the north side. SteveH
I’ll see ya out there..
Great Report Derek! How many days a year do you fish the lake! I wish I lived where you do!
