Well with a day off and Mike’s best friend visiting from Duluth. We had to hit the water. At 6:00am we loaded the boat with sandwichs(turkey) and bait(leeches, crawlers, willowcats) we were at the landing by 6:30. The wind was mild out of the west and the skies were clear and high. The boys were all fired up to do some bucktail fishing. Cody Anderson is Mikes best friend they share last names but are not related. Cody has never fished the river before so he was in for a treat. This first Photo is of Cody with his biggest walleye to date. This is a nice 24 inch Wabasha eye which he caught on a black bucktail, photoed and released.
Read on to here more about our day.
I have to say right from the get go it was the Cody Anderson show. He took our money on the first legal fish and the biggest of the day. We started out our day vertical jigging some bucktails. My boat saw lots of sheepies, a few crappies and sunnies. But our target fish was walleyes and we boat six with the bucktails vertical.
We also pitched jigs to rock points. This next photo is of Codys very first river eye. The river had come up a few inches and the flow was a little stronger but it made for a great day fishing seams, and drop offs.
About nine am we opted to start hitting some wing damns with bait. Each dam we stopped at we took fish just not all produced the right ones. Most of our wingdam fish were caught on willow cats. However nightcrawlers also put fish in the boat. On the dams we used what I call "Dork Rigs" it is a barrel sinker and a bead and hook. Our leaders are 12 to 16 inches long. We used number 2 gold aberdeen hooks today. We only fished about four different damns if we didn’t get bit on the first cast we moved.
Here is a set of wing damn doubles taken by Mike and Cody. They were some nice eaters one on a cat and one on a crawler, each were 18 inchs.
The boys were on a mission and that was to catch dinner. So we needed about five fish to feed the four of us. Here is a photo of the days catch. We found some fish dragging jigs with crawlers today also.
It was a great day to be on the water not many boats and the weather was fantastic.
The boys and I had a fun day on the water spinning tales and making memories.
I was also checked by the local Conservation Officer.
I would also like to remind everyone that there is a No-Wake in place from above the Wabasha Marina to below the city landing.
Good luck out there and let the big ones go to grow.
Here is another first for Cody.
Can you say Sheephead.
Here is a Damn Sucker!
