Mille Lacs Lake fishing report 6-11-06

The walleye fishing continues to be pretty darn good on Mille Lacs!!! Over the last few days I have spent sometime fishing new and old area’s. I have still found active fish in the rock to sand transistions. The east gravel on the south end of the lake has been putting out some nice fish.

I have been pulling spinners most of the time covering alot of area. The speeds have been around .9 up to 1.3 mph. The depth’s on the rock to sand areas have been from 25 to 28 fow and on the gravel area’s about the same!!! This past weekend Josh Hukriede hopped in my boat for a few trips out. Yesterday afternoon we hit the lake in search of some smallmouth only to find that the east winds had driven the fish out of the rocky areas I hoped to find them in. We did manage acouple of fish on B-Fish-N Tackle K-grub’s rigged on 3/32 oz.H20 jig’s head’s. One smallie Josh caught on a rattl’in trap!

The walleyes that we caught this weekend all came on hammered gold blades with a harness length of 7-8 feet. We rigged the crawler harness with 1 – 1 1/2oz bottom bouncers.

We also saw some new bug hatches coming up off the bottom in a number of area’s around the lake. I also had a few new lake flies flying around the house last night!! Just gota love them bug’s!! This last picture that Josh took, he must not of approved of my fishing cap!! Ya need to do better next time josh!!

  1. Nice report Bobber,

I was on the Southeast part of the lake on Saturday and had consistant action for most of the day. The majority of the action came on the rocks in 20-22 feet of water, although the larger fish we hooked up with came in 26-28 feet of water. We were rigging with 8-10 foot snells using leeches and crawlers. The crawlers had the most action early morning with leeches taking over midday. I was very impressed with the bite yesterday and can’t wait to get back up for some more.

  2. Take a kid fishing weekend.

With this past weekend being take a kid fishing weekend, I invited a couple of friends and the one’s son to come to Mille Lacs for the weekend. Fishing was fantastic!!! We started out on the south end and with the wind being too much for the young lad to handle, we loaded up the boat and headed for the other end of the lake. But not after this green gilled young man put the hurt on the rest of us and pulled in three nice nineteen inch keepers.

We resumed our fishing on the north east side of the lake up in the sand, and proceeded to have a day that this young man will soon not forget. Every drift that we made produced. We could do no wrong. Fishing in 25 to 28 feet of water, using slip rigs, leeches and crawlers seemed to be the lock in pattern for this event. At one point we had doubles and even a triple coming to the boat. Sizes ranged from multiple fifteen to nineteen inch fish coming to the boat. We also had three fish that just missed the 28 inch mark, along with “common” 23 to 25 inch fish.

I would like to say thanks to Frank and his son Ryan, and to Julian. These guys were real troopers with the wind factor going on and they all showed the ability to adapt. This trip was a fantastic time and I can’t wait for my grandson to get old enough to be able to satrt him down this road we call walleye fishing.

  3. Great report Bobber. Sorry we didn’t get a chance to chase some of those smallies . Next time. It was nice seeing you and Hooks on Thursday at weigh in. We just could not get our 19″ fish to go. We spent a little longer there on Thursday than we should of, but we still were able to weigh a limit as the last one came in 30 minutes before deadline. Friday we were throwing back a few fish we should have ended up keeping but knew those fish would not be big enough to jump us into the money. Instead we weighed a couple 16″ers instead of 17″ers

Kerk thanks for the great report.
