Mille Lacs Lake / Memorial weekend

What a weekend on the big pond. We had family and friends at the lake and spent most of it on the water to try and stay cool. Being on shore was like standing in a blast furnace. Friday during the day before most of our group arrived to the lake, the father in-law and I went out and did some rigging on flamingo reef. It was mid-day so we didn’t expect what we found. We boated several fish with some big girls that where plenty hungry. There wasn’t a requirement for to much finesse with these fish. They just smack it and the fight was on. We where using plain red hooks with 6 -8 ft snell. This first picture is Jerry Hanscom with a 27” eye.

That evening we picked up my brother who joined us for the evening bobber bite.

(goes by big G here on the site) We set up on a break in rock / gravel transition in 16 ft.

We had no problem staying busy. Glen got the easy job of being anchor boy. Jerry was in charge of the leech distribution and he got the short end of the stick this outing. We ended with 20+ fish coming to the boat in a few hours. Again a few bigger fish but a majority in that 15 – 17 inch range. We had Hunter Point Launch pull in beside us with a pretty good size group having a great time. The group kept the launch captain pretty busy, running from one end of the vessel to the other with the landing net.

When a guy had time to look around you could see nets out pretty much everywhere within sight distance. We watched boats anywhere from 8ft of water to 20+ catching fish.

I was using a plain hook, Glen had jig heads on using yellow in color and he went to black after a break off.

Sunday night we again anchored and did some bobber fishing in the company of Bobber and his wife Kathy. Also joining us was Shrum here from the site with his lady friend Joy. Here is a picture of Shrum and Joy bringing one in the boat. It was fun sitting out there visiting and talking smart. The fish where going again, but it wasn’t as good as the previous nights. We ended with 9 that night. If you have a chance to get to Mille Lacs now is as good of time as any. If you like the looks of fishing off the launch pictured here in my report click on the Hunter point banner and give them a call and set up a trip. Or if you would like your own personal guide shoot Bobber an email or pm. You won’t regret it! Be Safe and good fishin.

  1. Sorry I missed ya Derek. I had to run back to St.Cloud for work both Saturday and Monday. You stopped Saturday if I remember right. The girls all went out meat raffleing and Jerry said he just kicked back and rested for the evening bite. He mentioned you stopped by. I watched for you on the lake, but no go. I did try and raise you on the radio once or twice also. I heard you chatting with bobber one of those nights.
