Mille Lacs Lake "Bobber Fishing At Sunset"

The walleye fishing on Mille Lacs Lake continues to be good!! We experienced a great sunset bobber bite over this holiday weekend! Many boats experienced limit’s of walleye during the evening sunset periods. Most fish caught under a lighted bobber were small males in the 14-16 inch range with a few nicer 18-19 incher’s mixed in!!

I spent time this weekend fishing many of the transition areas around the eastside of the lake. Fishing with both leeches rigged on 8 ft lindy’s and also caught fish pulling blades and crawlers. I caught most of my fish while rigging in 21-26 fow. Over the rock to sand transitions and over the southend gravel.

On Friday we had calm winds before the big winds hit on Saturday. I’m glad we had the winds as we did, It was nice on the water compared to the warm temperatures on shore. I saw some folks in the lake swimming already!!!! wow-whoa…a bit early for this old boy!!

The bobber bite has been pretty good during the sunset hours of 7:30pm – 9:45pm. With the wind I had our lines rigged with a small jig head tipped with a leech. We fished in and around the 11-16 foot depth. We saw a number of larger fish caught this weekend, which show’s that the bigger females are now gitting back into the need to feed!

The bass season opened up on Saturday. But this fisherman experienced the best of walleye fishing to deviate from it…..there will plenty of time to get after some of those bronze backs!!!

If you have not had the opportunity to travel to Mille Lacs yet this summer, do so and experience some really good summer walleye fishing!! These 14-16 inch fish rally taste good in the fry pan!!

I’ll be pre-fishing this week for the up coming Minnesota Tournament Trail walleye event held next Saturday and Sunday here on Mille Lacs. What I need to do is now decide on where to fish? And what fish to put in the live well……Good luck and we’ll see ya on the water!!

  1. Great report Bobber! It is nice to see the variety of ways fish are caught on the big lake…I think I and the wife would love slip floating some eyes on the big pond!

  2. Awesome pic and report Bobber. We need to hook up after this next weeks fiascal is over. I need some of your smallie spots. Good luck and I will see you this weekend for sure.

  3. Great report Bobber! Nice to see Kath out there!

Here is a smallie we got during a guide trip on Saturday. This 19.5″ brute hit a Gold Fleck BFT K-Tail in 4 FOW. The bite was tough during the day, but picked up really nicely in the evening as you stated.

  4. Nice report Bobber. I agree that the fishing has turned on big time. We fished Sunday and we had a triple for the first time. That gets the dog running in circles. There are still a few fish on the North end but they are deeper. The reefs are also producing fish as we them on rigs. Long snells with pink hooks were the color with green second. It is a blast when they are hitting like that. I would like to mention that I would support a bottom size limit of 12″, as I witnessed a few guys cleaning eyes shorter than that. Just one guy’s opinion.

  5. Bobber,
Not to be a stalker, but we had a blast watching your pup on Saturday night. I noticed your’s and Hook’s rigs right away. Your dog was going nuts every time you caught a fish. We were anchored just to the SW of you. We also had a circus in our boat with Grandma and the two dogs with. We kept 10 and threw back atleast 20, so it was a very fun night. Many doubles and even a few triples.

  6. Funny…..she does get into her fishing!! when I start hauling stuff to the boat, my dog Mesa is ready to go with. She wants to bite every fish that comes to the boat!!! I was parked on the 7-11 break just alittle ways from the bouy. The boats just north up on top of the reef did realy well also. One of my neghbors was fishing by himself in a blue Lund tiller caught his 4 fish in an hour!!! he left at sunset……..say hi next time!!!
