Bone Lake, WI bass report 5-21-06

Now that is a smallie!! The Westonka Bass Club held its first event of the year on Bone Lake in Wi. We try to start across the border each year and take advantage of the chance to catch prespawn bass. As I had just got back from a walleye tourny the day before I was going into the day with no prefishing. I had only been on the lake 1 other time for a tourny and had caught some nice fish on deep weed edges prespawn and figured we would try the same.

Our fish spot we fished was a main lake point that led to a spawning bay. We started by throwing cranks on the deep weed edges holding the boat in 12-13′. The first fish my partner boated was a 40" muskie. We then boated a few 13-13.75" bass, a pike and another muskie in the mid to upper 30" range. We tried a few other spots and only caught sub 14" fish. We ran a couple shallow stretches but fortunatly for us we didn’t get bit, so we went back to our starting spot. It didn’t take long and the pictured smallie hit my crank in about 8′. She ended up weighing 4lb 13oz and took big fish for the day. We didn’t manage any other keepers there, so we went to another weed point and I cranked another keeper and my parter cranked up the 2nd big fish for the day at 3lb 11oz on his largemouth. We tried a couple other spots, but with no keepers. At about 1:30 we made a run into a small cut where we found water that had warmed up to 65 and I filled my limit and Erik picked up 1 more.

I was fortunate to win, and considered myself very lucky. Most of the other teams did catch their fish shallow tight under docks. Most anglers did not do as good as they had prefishing the couple days before. Most felt the 34 degree evening temps puplled most of their fish out.

I love fishing both walleyes and bass. For walleyes I spend most of my time guiding on Mille Lacs. For bass I spend a ton of time on Minnetonka, but I cover most of the greater Minneapolis/St Paul Full Bio ›

  5. In all my years (23) I have never seen a smallie out of Bone. Especially one of that size. Nice fish and nice job on the win. Bone is definately one of the top lakes in that area for big fish and big bags
