Springtime means Lake Zumbro Crappie time in SE Minnesota and I promised myself I wouldn’t miss it this year so Mike [HOF] and I set out to find the crappies. This was a very relaxing way of fishing as Mike wanted to run the front trolling motor in my boat so I got to sit on the rear platform and relax and catch crappies. Now thats the life. [thumbs up].
We fished for them in three different types of areas and found fish in all three. Just goes to show that all the fish aren’t doing the same thing at the same time in a body of water. First area we checked consisted of two different areas really but one was deep wood and the other was a dock area. Both produced fish but not enough action to stay longer than we did.
Another spot [#2] was an area completely different than the first ones. This was water that had wood but was very shallow. In fact the better fish came from water real close to the shoreline on a shallow area. We casted a Mini Mite jig set under a bobber one foot down. The bobber was used to try stay away from snags better and it worked very well. The fish caught were males and possibly shallow to fan out nest needed for the females to lay eggs on in the near future.
The third area we fished was an opening to a small bay which had water depths of a mixture of shallow and deeper. I would say 4-10 feet would cover the water depths we fished in. We basicly trolled Mini Mites with the trolling motor. A mixture of crappies and bluegills were caught at this area. Fishing for crappies in spring is a very fun and yet relaxing way of fishing. If you like action then this is the time to be on the water. The next several weeks will be alot of fun as it will be crappie time.
Thanks, Bill
Great report Bill. When are you going to show me how to catch some of those nice slabs? Love2Fish
Great report Bill, I will be out there on Sunday mourning wife & both of my daughters. Hopefully we can have the same luck. I’ll be in the black & tan crestliner with a yamaha. Say hi if you are fishing. I will post a report when I return.
Nice report Bill!
It sure is nice when #1 son gets to run the boat and you get to fish like ‘royalty’

Hey I’m not that old to be Mikes Dad. Add a couple years to his age and he could be older than me.
Thanks, Bill
Bill,
You’re getting close enough to know how us OFs think
