Lake Zumbro Crappies & Gills

A good looking day with some sun prompted my buddy Greg and I to try Lake Zumbro Wednesday. We were looking for crappies and bluegills. Although the fish had been up fairly shallow last week, today found them a bit deeper. The water temp was at 61 degrees today, a bit cooler than the last few days.

Our equipment consisted of St. Croix custom UL rods, Okuma Metaloid 15 reels, and Mini Mite jigs. We worked several shorelines and bays using the jig under the bobber technique. With the jig set between 2-5 ft. under the bobber, we cast into the shorelines and points that had some submerged wood.

We caught a mixed bag of gills and crappies, keeping enough for a meal and releasing many others to fight again another day. Catching those slabs on ultra-light equipment sure is fun! Those big fish can really put a bend in a UL rod and make the drag sing a pretty tune.

It was another great day on Lake Zumbro! I enjoyed having a chance to fish with Greg again, hope we get to do it again soon! Sounds like the weekend should provide some good weather and should also provide some good fishing. Hope you can all get out to enjoy some of the great spring-time fishing!

Been fishing Rochester and the surrounding area for 40+ years. I love all the lakes, rivers, and impoundments around Rochester, as well as pool 4 of the Mississippi.

  1. Thanks for the report and pics Mike. Sure is nice to see the water temp get back into the 60s which will mean that theres alot of great fishing just around the corner. No need to wait for the opener to get on the water as theres alot of gills and crappies waiting to be caught. And when the opener has come and gone theres still alot of good fishin close to home to hit between the walleye weekends.
    Thanks, Bill
