Channel Cat Fishing, Pool 3

After the three day rain last week and getting chased off the river with Chris Hanson aka Hanson by cloud to ground lightening, the weather started to cooperate at least with the precipitation.

These last few outings were “search for new places to fish” days on P3. Dave Scott aka Fisher Dave and I located a number of “new to me” spots that looked very promising for flatties. Of course a person can’t search for new areas with out wetting a line…

Here’s Fisher Dave with a 10 lbs channel caught while searching for night time spots.

The type of water Dave’s lunker came from was a very large and deep (34’) back eddie. We were using 3 and 4 oz no-roll sinkers, 12” leaders and Gamakatsu 6/0 circle hooks tipped with a very large chunk of cut red horse sucker from the Sturgeon Excursion. (thanks Tuck!) Because the eddie was so large and deep we fished almost directly under the boat. The up stream or end of the eddie produce a 10 and 14 lbs channel.

Pictured is my 14 pounder

Using the same techniques Friday, I went out solo and landed 9 channels with the largest in the 6 lbs range all from one shallow area next to deep water.

Sean McCawly aka Catten Addict and I did a little more scouting on Saturday. With lots of time spent moving around, we ended out the afternoon with 5 in the boat, many whiffs and a boat load of new areas to soak a bullhead.

The channel cat bite has been going strong for a while now. Grab the kid or a friend, some cut up suckers and spend a relaxing afternoon putting ol whiskers in the boat!

  1. Nice report guys! What really stood out in the pictures was how smart you guys are by wearing your life preservers. Way to go on the sucsesfull fishing too.

  2. Nice report Brian
Those are some nice looking channels. My son hooked into one while on the IGL walleye and panfish fishing this weekend. 4 & 1/2 foot ultralite rod and 4lb test + about 5-10 minutes of dancing in the boat = 3 lb kitty. Fun

  3. Nice report. I was in your neck of the woods on Saturday but was too busy with that trailer I bought. Next time I’m jumping into the River Pro. Nice pics. Any report on that Catfish Ale?

  4. Catfish Ale is great stuff!

I had a bottle the other day and as I’m not a dark beer drinker…it hit the spot!

Thanks again Boris! Not only for the 12er…but just for letting me know about it!

My new Canadian greeting is: How about a catfish ale, eh?

For all of you non Canadian speaking folks…that’s “Hello” in Canadian!

  5. There not hard to catch on pool 3! I caught one today trolling a Salmo Hornet in backwaters! 23″-5# RIGHT ON THE MONEY!Like I said………………….. Easy!

  6. BK not a bad report for a Catfish report

Thanks for sharing. Just might have to hook up with you this Summer for a night of cattin’, in’ and chattin’.

  7. Will do Ripster!

BTW…this cat report is just a primer for what’s around the corner….

I’m going to need some bait soon…so start saving those 22″ smallies, 30″ walleyes! Toss the large mouth back…they don’t work good for bait…something with the taste.
