Bull Gills on Lake Zumbro

The sun decided to show itself again after a less than great rainy cold weekend, so Ron (RHW) and I decided to try Lake Zumbro Tuesday. We were looking for crappies, but the big bull bluegills just wouldn’t let us alone! We did get a few crappies, but almost every area we fished produced big slab gills.

Our equipment consisted of 9 ft. St. Croix custom UL rods, Okuma Metaloid 15 reels, and Mini Mite jigs. We worked several shorelines and bays using the jig under the bobber technique. With the jig set just 2 ft. under the bobber, we cast into the shorelines in shallow water waiting to see that bobber go pop, which was the indication that another big gill was eating lunch.

The fishing on Lake Zumbro seems to just get better each year! Today was a great day for catching! We each kept a meal of gills and released many others to fight again another day. Catching those big gills on ultra-light equipment was a blast!

Another great day on Lake Zumbro! Lots of big fish, great weather, and great company! Just got to remember my hat next time – I got a little sunburned on my crome dome… Hope you can all get out to enjoy some of the great spring-time fishing!

Been fishing Rochester and the surrounding area for 40+ years. I love all the lakes, rivers, and impoundments around Rochester, as well as pool 4 of the Mississippi.

  1. Thanks for the report and pics. I like that 60 degree water temp I see you had. And the fishing is going to get even better as the temp goes up. Hopefully everything is working properly now after adding a new starter battery and key switch so I can check those gills out. Sounds like a great way to spend the day on the water.
    Thanks, Bill

  2. Awesome report guys! When it comes to panfish on Lake Zumbro, Mike and Ron are definatley masters at their game.

  3. Nice work guys
    Sounds like a great day.
Mike, don’t worry now that the first burn of the year is out of the way, the rest aren’t so painful
