Spring Fishing On Lake Zumbro In SE MN.

Sunday was a beautiful day to be on the water at Lake Zumbro with warm temps and a light action St. Croix rod in hand and panfish on the end of the line. This is what we all have been waiting for-spring and panfish to start the open water fishing season.

The fishing wasn’t fast but with some searching and checking out different types of structure fish were found. The crappies were tricked into biting using a mini mite plastic on a jig below a sensitive bobber around docks on the north side of the lake which had warmer water temps from being exposed to the rays of the sun.

Jigging a jig with a mini mite plastic with a minnow off a short ways from wood cover in 14-18 feet of water produced some nice fun action from strippers or white bass. These fish were alot of fun on my light action rod.

I located some nice wood and brush mixture on the bottom and found some panfish slightly into the wood jigging a mini mite again. To help keep the jig hanging directly below the boat in the wood without getting tangled I place a splitshot about eight inches above the jig. This little detail really helps you from getting tangled in the wood. Theres something about spring and panfish that gets a person fired up about being on the water catching fish without having to wait until the Opener. Get out there and catch a few and have some fun. You will be glad you did.

Thanks, Bill

  1. Nice report bill, and thanks for rubbing it in that i had to work on such a nice day

How busy was the lake on sunday being that it was so nice out

  2. Great report Bill. The fish did not mind a split shot above your jig? While fishing Chisage I had to add a split because of wind and never had a bite. Once I removed it I started gettin em again. Love2Fish.

  4. You get strippers on a mini mite plastic? I’ve always found dollar bills work best! Seriously, nice post. The white bass are going crazy on Pool 4 now as well (in the river).

  5. Luke, The water temp was 57 on sat.night, Will be back at it again soon, Good Fishin Doug. What’s it doing down there?
