Iowa Walleye and Bass Report

Beautiful Walleye’s and Big Bass! I don’t think you can have a better combination! Add in a couple of St. Croix rods, and some BFT ringworms and you have a formula for success and FUN!!

Andy Craig, and his Girlfriend did most of the bass catching today! Natalie taught us how to fish. Andy and I were casting for crappies, and she puts on a ringworm, and begins to put on a clinic for Andy, and I. Well, even though us guys don’t like to ask for directions, we aren’t completely ignorant. Shortly there after, we both had ringworms on and were getting in on the action as well.

We caught some very nice fish today, which all were released.

Technique: We were casting/pitching 1/16 precision jigs, rigged with BFT’s ringworms! Even though it was raining and overcast, we found that the darker colors outproduced the brighter colors. Cast it out, and bring it back painstakingly slow. SLOW slow slow. The males, seemed to barely just tick it, but those bigger females wanted to kill it! They would smash it, and not let go! Andy caught some absolute hawgs today!

Andy definetely put on the clinic for big bass- We had one spot where we had 5 five lbs plus fish in five consecutive casts. Say that five times fast. Most people stayed indoors today, as it stormed the majority of the day. Call us crazy, but we had a blast! Fishing is coming into prime time! This is my favorite time of the year to take kids/cousins fishing. Get them in on some great fishing action, teach them some catch photo and release, and get them hooked on a good thing for life. Rain or shine, we’ll see you on the water! Stay safe and good fishing!

  1. Nice report Luke. I got two more 5+ lb bass out there right before a storm came in yesterday. I was by myself, so no pics. Hopefully, we can get a few more hoglegs this week!!!

AlvinMack, what are you trying to do to us man?? Just kidding… I love that mugshot on your profile pic by the way. Group X????

  2. Mack, we were fishing a local body of water which is near Iowa City, Iowa. It kind of runs off the main river, and has an inlet from that. I am not going to name it, I might later this summer, when the fish are not as vulnerable…

Anyways just thought I would note a reminder on rules/regs:

    Inland waters

The daily bag limit is 3 in any combination of black bass.

The possession limit is 6 in any combination of black bass.

The season is open all year.

    ——————————————————————————–

    Border Lakes

The closed season on black bass is from February 16 through the Friday before the Saturday closest to May 1 on these lakes:

    Little Spirit Lake, Dickinson County

    Iowa Lake, Emmet County

    Tuttle (Okamanpedan) Lake, Emmet County

    Burt (Swag) Lake, Kossuth County

    Iowa Lake, Osceola County

The daily bag limit and possession limit is 6 black bass.

There are also some spots that are catch and release only.

Make sure to check out the Iowa DNR homepage for more fishing regulations.

I’m starting to believe you take the computer with you fishing with all the reports great job luke.

    lol…
As far as I know, tuck is the only one who has done the AWESOME live, on the water fishing reports, with the wireless internet. I can’t do two things at once..
Some times I forget to reel after I set the hook…

  4. Good pictures and report. You guys would still be fishing panfish if Natalie hadn’t clued you in. Good Woman there.

  5. Luke that must be one of the best stocked Iowa farm ponds.

Thanks for the great report and pic’s Luke, them are some great fish.

  6. Jeff- lol,…I WISH it was a farm pond, and not a local body of water!

Furthermore, I wish it was a private farm pond, and that I owned it…

Even furthermore- I wish we hadn’t caught the bass next to twenty guys who were like “you gonna keep that bass?” just waiting to jump on you if you said no. Had to throw it in before we answered.

They haven’t stocked it in many years.. and what is really sad, is it will be soon fished out.

It doesn’t look like it from the photos, but it can make fools out of the best of us! Andy, Natalie, and I, were the only ones out of about twenty fisherman, that were catching bass. If it wasn’t for her(and those BFT ringworms..), we wouldn’t have caught them either..

  7. I know where your getting them Luke, Ive fished that body of water befor. Did you get the walleye out of there too, nice walleye by the way. Thinking about getting a boat in there and jigging for walleyes? i’ll bet theres more females around feeding on the smaller crappies or thier going to spawn there, probably both.
