Iowa Slab Crappies

Andy, Trevor, and I hit a body of water tonight in search for crappies. We found them, and found a lot of them! We fished for about two hours, and caught too many to count! We released all the fish.

Slip floats and minnows were working very well, but it was a pain to re-bait every thirty seconds. So, I tied on a 1/16 oz. BFT precision head and a white and silver tube. Pretty soon, Andy and Trevor had them on as well. And then it was every other cast. They were a ton of fun, on the St. Croix legend elite medium action rods.

Most of the fish were the in the 12" range. Maybe half a dozen out of the many were smaller than that. And we had some that were in the 13-14 inch range. I was really hoping for a 15" plus fish. But we couldn’t seem to get above the 14" mark. We won’t complain about the fishing. It was a blast.

I know these aren’t pool four pig walleyes. But they are fun to catch, and you can’t beat good times with friends. Crappies become very, very vulnerable this time of year. I can not stress the importance of catch and release. Don’t get me wrong, I love to eat 5 crappies for a meal once a month. But you could stack up fifty fish in one hour.

Just try and keep in mind the younger kids, and the future of a fishery when they are feeding like they were today.

Tubes, friends, and crappies make for good memories! Thanks Andy, and Trevor, for the good times and great memories! Good fishing, and we’ll see you on the water!

  1. Great report Luke! I love Crappies too! I caught a 12.5″er on Pool 4 Tues on a 3/32oz jig/ringworm…sorry I didn’t get a pic.

That was a GREAT DAY for you on the pond!

  2. I was just looking at the pics you sent. glad you made the report, now i don’t have to. that was some good fishing… that’s all i can say. Wow! thank god some of us still let em go.

  3. Pool 4 Hawg Slaughter, PFFFFFFT!!!! I would take an evening of slab crappies any day over Pool 4, maybe its just cuz the only paint I like to see exchanged is on Sunday during NASCAR. They can keep the bumper boats, I want to go fishing with you man!!!!!

  4. Thanks for the report and pics. Always a blast catching crappies. And especially big ones. Doesn’t matter what age people are catching big panfish always brings out the kid in us. Keep the crappie reports comin. Try pulling them in on light action and ultra light action rods and you will have a ton of fun.
    Thanks, Bill

  5. Nice fish guys, we got into the crappies yesterday too. Ours were ranging from 8.5-9 inches though, still fun to catch something, but those pictures make me jealous.

  6. Nice report Luke. Looks like you were shore fishing? Do you have any idea what the water temp was? Great looking slabs. Love2Fish.

  7. Love2Fish-

I am guessing water temp at or around 40-45…
    Yep, we were shore fishing!
I was going to go out again today, but we have winds consistent at 35-40..ouch

  8. Nice report Luke. Gotta love Spring! You don’t even need a boat to get at the fish. Good call on catch and release. People often forget that we need to put some of the crappies back too. Keep a few here and there but save some for the next fishing trip!

  9. Had a chance to get a into some more tonight..
I kept five tonight to eat… but caught a lot more…
Andy, are you ready to go in the morning?

  10. The crappies are fun this time of year, looks and sounds like you had a blast. Thanks for the comments on the necessity for catch and release, exspecally at this time of year. I’ve seen to many people hoarding these fish when they are easy to catch. Keep it up and good fishing.
    Thanks, Hoistafish

  11. Luke and Andy, great report, those are some awesome crappies. The ice is off on the IGL’s so I’ll be trying to get into crappie real soon.
Great advice on C & R.You mean it’s not cool to keep 165 crappie in a day?Ran into a guy 2 years ago who had buckets of them and was very proud on the # of fish he had.Tried to explain it to him but he had none of it.
Anyway another fine outting for you guys.

  12. Nope, that is not cool! I like the guys that have two buckets each, and are overflowing. I say, “Nice fish, got enough (nicely)..”…”oh yeah, I am having a fish fry tonight, you know, once a year thing”..then they are back the next day, with the same buckets overflowing.
    I just do not understand…

Iowa really really, needs to implement a limit and possesion law.
I guess some people like to show off their numbers…
It must be really hard to catch a lot them during the spring…
