Lake Winnibigoshish Perch Report 3/13

Jumbo Perch on Lake Winnie are still a little elusive. However, many people this weekend had decent catches of quality fish. As of today, the roads are in great shape and with the big meltdown over the weekend, most of the snow is gone and travel on the lake is no problem with 4WD.

Zoomers and the North Humps produced quite a few fish in the 10″ – 13″ range in 26 – 30 FOW. Color didn’t seem to matter much, but it’s a very light bite so if you don’t pay attention, you’ll miss a lot of fish. The best bite was between 7:30 and 11 in the morning and 2-4 in the afternoon.

Center bar has started to give up some fish and the smaller Perch are moving into Tamarack Bay. If you fish the bay, drill a bunch of holes and keep moving around picking off the larger fish.

Cut Foot is still giving up some nice Crappies and Gills, but there was a lot of water on the ice. The Perch are still biting on Little Cut Foot, but they have a lot of grubs in them.

All the fish caught this weekend are spitting up either crayfish or mayfly larvae. There is a lot of food in the water for them this year and I’ve heard a lot of people complain about the fishing this winter. For what it’s worth, here’s my 2 cents.

There are a lot of quality fish in the lake and the lake itself is extremely healthy with good populations of all species and plenty of food for them to eat. This winter did not produce limits for every person who fished. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. With all the available forage, the fish that didn’t get caught will only get healthier and bigger. In turn, this will keep the lake in good shape for years to come. It’s seems that there are a lot of people out there (certainly not everyone) that focus on quantity instead of quality when it comes to Perch fishing. I realize that it costs money to take a trip. You want to catch fish and you should. But getting a limit everytime you go out is just not a reasonable expectation. It would be nice to see people lighten up a little bit and just enjoy the experience and the fact that they’re not working or doing some other undesirable task.

After all it’s called “Fishing” If it was called “Catching”, everyone would do it!

O.K. that’s all I have to say about that. I welcome your comments and criticism.

Enjoy the last couple weeks of the season. Have fun and be safe. The late bite is just around the corner and there are still a lot of fish to be caught.

  1. Good point Jeff. Enjoy the fun and worry less about filling the freezer. Sure fishing trips cost money and if that warrants needing a limit to justify it, you are a bad accountant. Go buy fish in the store it is a lot cheaper.
    Thanks for the updated reports.

  2. here here , thanks to the abundance of food in the lake well be able to catch fish there for years to come instead of fishing them all out , even a bad day of fishing is better that a good day at work !!!
