Mille Lacs Lake perch report 3-11-06

This past Saturday our group fished in the 3rd. Annual White Cap Inn perch pounder. We started the morning off enjoying a great breakfest offered to all IDA members at Hunters Point Resort! We got on the ice around 7:30am fishing 32 fow just outside of Hunters 2 mile. The perch fishing was pretty slow…..

The contest was won with a 1 lb 5.6oz perch! Big fish in our group was a 14 oz’er. The White Cap event drew around 300 folk’s that enjoyed a very fun event! Dick and Sue Robertson owner’s of White Cap feed the hungry guests some great tasting pork!! Three pig’s were roasted on hot maple coal’s……oh boy I can still smell that pig cooking!!!

Well back to the fishing information!! The problem that our group experienced along with many other Mille Lacs anglers is the feeding habit’s of these perch. Many of the perch that were caught have been spitting up blood worm’s shown in photo with the yellow bucket. These perch are gorging on these blood worm’s and have been keeping themselves well fed and not interested in anything that we have put down in the strike zone.

The lake conditions on Saturday started out ok. By the day’s end we experienced some pretty deep water in some areas between the road bank’s. I did hear that Fishers and Castaway’s had their lake accesses closed on Saturday morning. Hunters Point had vehicles using their road again this Sunday. If you are planning a March trip to Mille Lacs, call ahead or check here on IDA for current lake access conditions. It may change to ATV travel soon if this water and slush problems get worse.

I would like to thank George and Linda Nitti for offering IDA members the free breakfest on Saturday along with access on the lake at Hunter’s!! And too Dick and Sue Robertson of White Cap Inn for putting on another very fun filled event with The Perch Pounder!!!

Thanks again!!! we all enjoyed a fun day!!!

  1. Thanks for the report and pics Bob. Nice turn out and fishin with friends is hard to beat.

Just got finished reading Joes report about bank fishing for catfish in Iowa with 50 plus degrees to reading your report of ”on the ice” fishing for perch. Next will be Toms report on Texas bass and then Johns report on pool 5 on the Mississippi River then Mikes [AMWatson] report on fishing around the LaCrosse, Wisconsin area and Dustins and Brianks and Jarrads and the list goes on and on. WOW, you just can’t find a better place to catch all the action in so many different places like you can here at IDA. Thanks EVERYONE.

    Thanks, Bill

  2. I went to school in Colorado where I did a lot of fly fishing. Each year we would take trip to the San Juan River in New Mexico and of the hottest flies I ever fished there was a little red annelid (called an OJ or Hot Shot). My guess is that it’s pretty close to the blood worms you guys are seeing. Anyone ever try a “fly” with a split shot up a ways to get these finnicky fish? Just thinking outside the box a bit.

  3. I too would like to thank George (or is it Georgette ) for serving us a great breakfast and having a meat raffle that 2 of us won meat and to Dick and Sue for the fun!!! Fun to have the Hukriede’s and Carlson’s at White Cap Inn Friday night for Bob’s Birthday and visiting with great friends

  4. Bob’s birthday!! Nobody said anything that it was his birthday. Next year I will remember that one Bob.

    Happy Be-lated birthday !
