Mississippi River, Guttenberg Walleye and Sauger-

Today I was able to do one of my favorite things- Go fishing with my old man! After a quick discussion this morning about the rain near the southern pools of the Miss, we decided to head north to Guttenberg. Good Choice! The water was really clean, and the fish were in a decent mood.

Getting our limit today was a little tougher than usual. But we still managed some very nice eaters, and one nice 22" male walleye (released). We literally were all over the whole pool. Caught a few nice ones near the dam. Some in Ackerman’s, and some in-between wing dams.

There were a ton of little fish also caught- All in all we probably each caught 20-25 fish. We had a few nice catfish(2-3 lbs. range) down in Ackerman’s.

The current was very strong. We were using 3/4 or 1 ounce jigs. Rigged with BFT ringies! Cotton candy was the best color, had a few fish on some other colors as well. Simple raise and lower, maintaining contact with the bottom seemed to work the best. I did try just holding the jig a little above the bottom, but that didn’t yield any results. The main depths we fished were 20-30 feet. No depths yielded more fish than others, they were very spread out. I tried pitching a few smaller jigs and ringies and the end of the night in 15 foot of water, over some nice rockpiles, with no luck…

The weather is going to be getting better by the day. And with that, so will the fishing. Now is the time to get out and have some fun, and make life-long memories with friends and family! On a side note, I haven’t been able to take my wife "river walleye fishing" yet this year. I get home tonight, and she said " I could have missed work today.." I am in the doghouse, to say the least…

Thanks for the trip Dad!!

Good Fishing, and We’ll see you on the water!!
