Lake Winnibigoshish Fishing Report – 1/31/06

There was a good bite on Lake Winnie this past week. The Jumbo Perch are becoming more cooperative with limits of nice fish being caught by many of our guests.

Several areas are now giving up nice fish. On the west shore, fish from Ravens Point to Mallard in 22-28 FOW. Don’t be afraid to run in shallower if the action is slow. Many fish are still being caught in 12-18 FOW. The opening to 3rd river is still pretty hot as well, fish 12 FOW and move frequently when the active fish have been taken. Zoomers bar in 22-28 FOW has become very active with nice jumbos and on the South end, there are still fish being caught along the break line at 30ft between Richards Town Site and what used to be Judd’s Resort. In Tamarack Bay, fish the 12′ break north of Plughat point. You will need to do some sorting, but there are some nice fish being caught here as well.

Your best bet for Walleyes is low light hours. Perch Bar, Center Bar and Moxies contain some active fish. Fatheads on a jigging spoon or Fire Ant Jig have been effective presentations.

For Perch, small presentations are still the best bet. Bug like jigs and small Forage Minnows with just a minnow head or a Crappie minnow continue to produce well. Keep moving until you find active fish and don’t be afraid to get in an area that is away from the crowds. Action on top of the ice really seems to be affecting the bite.

Travel on the lake is still very good with 17-22 inches of ice and almost no snow. There are some small pressure ridges that you need to watch out for and some large chunks of ice sticking up that you don’t want to hit with your truck. For additional information, be sure to ask the local bait shops or resort where you are driving on.

If there is any additional info I can provide, I will update this post and answer questions as they come up.

Until next time, be safe and good fishing.

Jeff

  1. Great report. We were just trying to figure out when we should head up that way after a limit of perch. I think we will still give it a couple of weeks and then watch out perch. Thanks for the heads up on the ice chunks and ice thickness.

  3. Jeff, Great Report
A group of us will be headed up end of next week. I will continue to watch for updates. I will be trying to locate the areas on our lake map, but may have a few questions for you. Again, thanks for the updates and keep them coming.

  4. I just talked to my brother and his buddy and they are doing very good on Winnie right now. He said they are on the West side in 24 fow, but he didn’t know any more about the location. They got out there at 9 am this morning and started catching fish. They have kept 20 perch and a 16 inch walleye. He said they released another 20 perch, 5 walleyes, a northern, eelpout, and rock bass. I got pretty pumped when he caught two walleyes in the five minutes that I talked to him. I will post again if he gives me some more info.

  5. Luke,
Are you sure you are feeling okay? That statement just is not needed on this site…j/k. I will have to agree that they do have some pretty good fishing lakes though. Ted
