Mille Lacs winds from the East

Well after confirming with a couple of family members about fishing Mille Lacs I was excited and anxious to fish the big pond again!! Until I seen the weather forcast and the direction of the wind..The dreaded East winds on Mille Lacs..As the saying goes “Winds from the East fish bite the least”…However, like my father said “Sure beats sitting at home”
We decided to target active fish, which meant staying mobile all day long. Here is a example of the fine perch this lake has to offer!

When the fishing gets down right tough one thing that I have found that is important is to try and match your presentation to what the fish are actually feeding on. In this case as you see in the photo of what this perch spit up. These perch are feeding big time on the smaller 2-3″ers in the lake right now. I find that is always important to look in the mouth of a fish after you catch them espically from these depths 30+ feet of water. Look for a jig in your box that best represents their appetite of choice. This will greatly increase your odds of putting more fish onto the ice durning sluggish times.

All in all the bite for us on Saturday was a bit sluggish but we did manage to put a nice bunch of perch on the ice. Staying mobile, paying attention to detail, and not letting mother nature slow you down will help put some fish on the ice this late January fishing..

One final note about the ice conditions..It seems to be holding up just fine with the warmer weather and rain last week. USE CAUTION WHEN MOVING ABOUT THE LAKE…
We had about 18″ of ice everywhere!!

Good luck and see ya on the ice

  1. Awesome first report Calvin I’m sure that is the first of many to come. I hope to get back up there sometime soon . Looking forward to your future reports. Great pic and conparison showing the lure/forage/fish, probably something that is way to often overlooked by most anglers on a “tough bite”. You have been on fish all Fall & Winter

  2. nice report ranger29 or a sorry it is now Mr.Calvin Svihel you a fishing GOD Can’t wait to fish league with you this summer, save up some of that luck so i don’t have to carry the team again

  3. I am not too worried about being outfished by a guy who’s screen name is swamptrout and is wearing a glove when holding walleys…I am sure glad live bait is not allowed in league..cause I would get sick of baiting your hook all the time!!!

  4. Nice report, and those are some great looking perch! I too have lived by the “wind from the east the fish bite the least”, but some of my best fishing last summer was with east winds I couldn’t figure it?
