After reading all the repors of the great bite on Mille Lacs I had planned to make a run to the lake today. I met up with a buddy that did real well yesterday at about 9 at his fish house and we headed out to the mud. We fished the bottom of the flat keying on the 30′ range and did quite well. Or should I say Mark did quite well. He waxed me on the walleyes, but I got the biggest perch and only pout! Pictured are the fish I brought home for the frying pan. The 8 walleyes we kept were in the 15"-18" range with others released. Most came jigging a minnow head. The perch we kept were 9"-11" with the biggest over 12". They came on the same spoon and head, but my 2 biggest took a fathead under a bobber.
The fish bit real good from 11am-2pm and started to slow as the wind picked up with the on coming snow. After 2 we didn’t catch much, even with moving around. The ice was 16-18" and trucks were driving, although I stuck to the atv. There was not much snow on the ice, but that will change overnight. All the slush has frozen and the lake was a little rough in areas. Good luck to all this weekend. I’m going to LOW!
Great to see the perch are biting as well as the walleye. It seems like the fish should of bit better the later in the day it got but I usually guess wrong . I may have to get up that way sometime next week if the ice firms up so I can take out my pickup without worry. Thanks for the report and photo.
Steve
nice fish mike…hope to get a ride in your new boat this summer!
Steve,
They have been biting better in the evening, but I think the weather change shut them down early. I talked to 2 guys a bit ago that are fishing in the general area and they have 3 walleyes and no perch. They said they are marking lots of fish, and seeing them on the camara, but they just won’t bite.
Scott,
I’ll get you out in the Skeeter! My boat, your spots! lol
The bite has definately been better in the evening. Good luck to you all
