This afternoon I decided that it was time to go to the Mud! Well my decision was a very good one…….I left shore at around 12:30pm and was back home by 5:30pm. So it was a pretty quick trip. The fishing was great! my first three walleye were 27, 25, and a 26 incher!!in that order. The ride out was no problem, once I went over the pressure ridge near shore. It was a straight shot, just a little snow and a good 13 inches of ice!
I ran out to a flat that had produced last year for me. I ran up on to the edge of the flat on the GPS. Drilled a hole and found it to be 25 fow. After drilling a few more holes, I realized that I had been in the right spot in the first hole! The break ran from 25 fow on top to just 25 feet walking distance to 30 fow……a very nice drop.
I managed around a dozen walleye from 3pm to just after 5pm. I went home with my 4 slots around 15 inches each. Not big slots put nice eaters for sure!! The fish were all caught jigging a orange/green Jr’s jigging spoon. Tipped with just the head of a minnow.
I had a number of fish enter into my Vexilar cone, Those that wanted the bait took it, while many came and went. The fish are fat, the shorter 25 inch walleye may have weighed around 6-6.5 lbs. I’ll be heading back Tommorrow and give this spot another go. Puddlepounder and I will be heading to the mud again on Wednesday. We will have some better pic’s with Tom along. Its hard to get good pic’s when your all alone. I really want a quick pic and get them back down the hole. It’s time to eat….got to go now and eat some fresh fish!!!
Nice fish and pics I can’t wait to get up to Mille Lac for the GTG. I am hoping to find at least 1 eye while we are there. I have never ice fished a lake for walleyes.
Am, you picked a good year to hit Mille Lacs. I think we’ll catch a lot of fish through the ice this year. Those little guys can get plain crazy out on the mud at times. The launches were running full boats out to the mud in late Oct hammering the little fellas. I’m guessing they are all still there.
Great fish Bob, can’t wait to tailpipe you on the 20th!!!
Bob, I can’t believe there isn’t anyone to go fishing with you. If I were home from school, I would load up the sled and house and be there in a heartbeat. Maybe later this year I could follow you around a little bit???
Thanks for a great report Bobber, Can’t wait to get up and fish with you
i was out this afternoon and found about the same down here on the south end, except i missed 5 fish that just had the head in their mouth and when you pull up on it to jig it, they are there and you pull the head off of the hook. i did catch a 17 and a 22, lost another at the hole that was a high teens fish. jigging rapalas were working good also. i will give it one more try down here on the south end, maybe try some gravel spots? i ran into joe fellegy today and he said that there is a good bite going on the north end also. it sounds like the lake is real healthy and we should have a good year……….tom f
Bobber, great report! Nice fish you dog! Teasing us like that! That didn’t look like a minnow head on your spoon, was it?
Tom, glad to hear you were not one of the 7 smoke eaters injured today! No doubt you knew them. Hat’s off to you guys who lay it on the line every day!
Have fun with Bob! At least with you there, we’ll get the true lengths of the fish!
Just kidding! Have fun!
Tuck
i don’t know any details at this point. i drive by that building almost every day that i work. i assume that they were from my station. they could be from rescue 9 which is our haz-mat rig and would be doing the monitoring. i will post when i get the skinny on what happend…….tom f
Thanks for the report and pics Bud. Ok guys, when the GTG takes place just follow Bobber. Nice fish.
Thanks, Bill
nice fish bob. i concur with tuck, thats either half a minnow, or a baby squid !!!
g
Glad to see you hit the flats early Bob. The fish are still going on those sharp breaks. Good Job.
Now hit the flat west of there we hammered them on and lets see your next report!
Thanks for all the comments! It fun when you are catching fish………
Hook, I think Puddlepounder and I may visit that spot on Wednesday. As far as Tuck and G man looking at my bait in the photo. I was switching around a bit when I had the activity below without any taker’s. I was using just the head of a minnow pinched off behind its gill plate most of the time. In the photo it shows one that I left a bit bigger. You guys are good!!!!! I see that your looking closely at the photos!!!!!!!!Tuck, you should also see that in most pic’s I have also put something near the fish…..showing its size the boots I have been wearing are LaCrosse Ice Kings…which are big boots baby!!!
Are they finally plowing the lake and bringing out big houses? OR have you heard when Hunters or Agate plan to?
Both Hunters and Agate Bay were plowing with trucks on the Monday. I have not heard when they plan to pull houses. The cold weather hopfully has helped heal up some cracks and pressure ridges that have been giving them problems. The warm up in the forecast is not good news for ice conditions! The ice tends to expand with a warming trend….ever set a tray of ice cubes out on the counter? try it sometime and see what the cubes do!!!!
Nice report and pics Bob. Did you pick up any during the day?
Scott,
He noted in the first paragraph, afternoon 12:30-5:30 PM.
You know Bob doesn’t fish in the morning!
I saw that hooks, I am just wondering how the bite was between 12:30 & 3:00…I know how it is after that
Great Report and thanks for the info BOB! Looking forward to making it up sometime ! I can’t believe it is already 12/20/05. Man does time fly. I’m itching real bad cause I have not caught a Walleye since the end of October
Scott…..all my fish came after 3pm!!!!!
Thanks Bob
bobber, i have tried setting ice cubes out on the counter at the cabin, but dman keeps using them up before they can get a chance to melt !!!

Update 12-20-05
Went back to my spot from Monday. Pretty much the same pattern……all fish came after 3 pm and lasted till I left at 5:30pm. Lost a big fish trying to get her started in the hole! ended up taking 4 slots home again tonite. I maybe caught around 7-8 fish. Today there were two small trucks out in this area. One said they drove out from Liberty Beach.
The mud bite looks good so far!!!
You must be eating a lot of fish!
I didn’t know LaCrosse boots came in size 2!
Where does one get a 12″ judge?
Just kidding! Truth is I am jealous! Good job!
