Mississippi River Pool 7 Bass & Walleye Report

Thursday, I had the distinct pleasure of fishing with 2 good friends. Haywood04 & Alvinmack5. The day started out foggy and with little action. Only one nice sized Sauger and a Walleye in the 16" range coming to the boat.

After making some adjustments to location and presentation, Alvinmack5 boated this 4+lb Smallie on a Lucky Craft crank. We didn’t get a measurement on the fish, only a weight. 4.1 on the digital scale. Surely a great fish.

Here’s a closeup of Macks fish. The late high water we had put the fishing into a tail spin on pool 7, forcing us to fish more non-traditional spots. The quality and quantity of the fish lately has been nothing like last year. I’m not seeing the sumo smallies in huge numbers. Mostly smaller fish with a few scattered hogs thrown in the mix. Not that I’m complaining, because the Walleye bite has surely picked up recently.

The ‘eyes on 7 are feeding heavily and haven’t been hard to find. Before the river started to fall from the higher stages, my Dad and I were getting some nice ‘eyes fishing sand current seams & eddys. Many of them like the pair Alvinmack & Haywood04 are holding in this pic.

For the day on Thursday, we had 5 Walleye and 1 really nice Sauger. Almost all of the fish were caught on white BFT Paddletails or Jimmy D’s River Bugs. If you haven’t experimented with either bait, I highly advise it. I fish both baits on a 6′ 8" St. Croix Avid rigged 8lb CX Premium P-Line. The sensitivity of the rod and line is fantastic.

Lastly, the Stripers are running on 7 too. We boated probably over 50 in one spot. Many triples between Mack, Haywood04 & myself. Some of the Stripers were in the 18" neighborhood. truly a treat.

  1. Great report Blue.
How cool to see mack holding a walleye. Coming out of the closet can be a hard thing to do mack. I’m here for ya buddy

  2. I had a great time with these two BIG dudes (Alvinmack5 and Bluefleck)

Alvinmack treated us to his river pro and it did not dissipoint. We took a run through some of the skinny-est water we could find, including some dry land, and never missed a beat.

Good times and good fishing were had all the way round.

    Thanks again guys.

  3. Thanks for showing us your home waters Blue . I honestly havent had that much fun fishing in a long long time. You and Haywood were great for making me laugh all day! Haywood was the Pike king. He caught one big piggie slimer that had be dang near 30″ and had one nail a sweet beaver that made one monster boil.

Alot of ducks down there too
