Mississippi River Pool 2 Fishing report 10-21-05

This is a short little update on the Pool 2 bite that I have been experiencing as of late. The action has not been fast and furious, but the consistency is starting to show up on every outing. The shoreline current breaks that I have been catching fish on the last two weeks of higher water have become quiet as the fish seem to be pulling back out on the wing dams. The river is quickly returning back to normal every day now. I would say with in a 4 days, the river should be back to close to normal conditions.

With the river dropping quickly each day, my concentration is being applied closer to the main channel structures such as head of islands, wing dams, and backwater cuts that are adjacent to the main channel, etc… These are the pieces that are turning fish now. Pitching hair and plastics has been my mainstay. I have spent little time lately pitching Bombers and other cranks to these structures, but I would expect this bite to be present with the 52 degree water that we have now. This bite for me usually lasts up until early November or water temps hit that mid 40’s and then the fish turn to more slower and methodical presentations.

Catches have been about 8-10 fish per outing right now with fish ranging from 19”-27” the last couple trips. I would guess the will improve each day as the water levels continue to drop and stabilize. I am extremely excited to get on with a good solid fall river bite.

So, I will report back as often as I can….

Its been a few days since my last visit to Pool 2, so Bailey and I are heading to the river as we speak to see how things are shaping up.

Have a good weekend to al!

  1. Maybe it is just the pics, but those fish all look a little long and skinny for Pool 2.

    Any thoughts Steve?

  2. I wondered how long it would be before Steve was back walleye fishing…..those Mille lacs reports must of gotten to him! By the way nice fish and great report as usual!
