QUICKIE REPORT FROM THE POND OF MADNESS10.18.05

The MADNESS continues on the water and on this body of mine. This work thing really cuts into a guys beauty rest after fishing all night and working all day for this past week. Last night, I was back out just like the rest of the week and shared my boat with my brother Rich and Calvin (Ranger 29) from the site. It started out as one of those nights that it felt like I should have stayed home. For the Millionth time the weather report was way off their wind speed prediction. Then to just about to throw the boat in @ Pikes Point landing and notice that there were no boat keys. Guys from work had took them out to get my receiver off my work truck and did not give them back. We decided to run on just the kicker all night. We made about 2 passes on Pikes and boated 2 fish and the wind had really picked up. We decided to put the boat back on and trailer North. This was a adventure in itself, with the waves crashing the landing and having no big motor. Once we made it to our new destination our luck changed hand. We found calmer waters and way more aggressive fish.

My brother Rich seems to have the lucky horseshoe stuck up his this year. I have taken him out a half dozen times this year and every time he has landed a really nice fish. As shown here, with his personal best Walleye that was pushing the 9 lb barrier. The lake had way less traffic last night than the Monday night before when I was a passenger and net boy for Calvin! Calvin boated a few really nice fish with a Piggy that hit the tape right at 28” but we had no digital camera. We each had caught a decent toothie and when I netted his, I mad sure to throw it on that nice clean Ranger Floor. Thanks for sharing the boat with me Calvin as it was a nice break from being Captain and sitting back and enjoying a great night Monday. The second picture here is one of a couple beauty pike that Calvin had a chance to wrestle with last night. I guess he got me back last night, cause after having a few of those slimers in your boat it really starts to stink.

There was no doubt a hot color last night and after losing one of my cranks to a toothie and Rich losing another to a technical problem, we were down to one Husky Jerk # 12 in a Tennessee Shad color (I think, Black Top, Gold Sides, Orange Belly) Lets just say that Rich put a schoolin’ to Calvin (Rough Fish Boy) and I with this color and size. Rich boated the only picture worthy eyes on our short night on the pond. So remember to have a healthy supply of your hot colors. We fished for a total of 5 hours and had a pretty steady bite until about 12:30 where it died off to just a few straggler eaters. Last night we worked the rocks with husky jerks with the previous mentioned kickin color. Speeds last night were from 1.3 to 1.7 mph and they seemed to like the more natural colors. Just to reitterate what everyone already knows, man these fish are FAT. So, if you are looking to still get into the action and wondering if the bite is still on? WELL, IT IS! There is a rumor that the bite will end soon, so you better get up here this weekend and catch them before they are gone.

This Fall Mille Lacs trolling thing is about the only thing that can rip me away form my true passion of bow hunting. That was just confirmed this Fall. Usually I’m full throttle in the woods chasing monster bucks, but this Fall I have spent a majority of my time chasing Monster Piggy Walleyes. For those of you that have debated and have not experienced this bite and what it has to offer. It is time to get off your butt and get into the action. If you are unsure about the lake and the complexity and dangers that night fishing can bring on. I would suggest looking into hiring a guide next October Full Moon. There are a few great ones here right on our website. They can curl the learning curve down and are a trough of knowledge and very open with information. I can’t comment enough how much fun and how much I have learned from people on this site. I just want to thank everyone and I’m glad to be part of this thing we call IDA

Favorite thing is chasing Monster Bucks with a bow. Fishing eyes and chasing those ringnecks with my buddy Rufus is hard to beat! I fish Mille Lacs,Pool 2& Minnewawa the most. I run a Red Ranger 620 with Mercury's, Full Bio ›

  3. WOW. Nice work, Rob. And if you’re going to tangle with Peter Pike, that’s the size to make it worth your while.

  4. Thanks Guys!

Sorry I missed you up there Kooty, besides our quick handshake at the landing! Here is another “Rough Fish” That came to our boat! I think we had 3 toothies and 2 smallies last night

Remember only 11 more months until the September Full Moon Lets not forget, there is still a November Fulll Moon ….. Oh yeah…. “The bite is over.”

You will be living in Somalie central.

We are actually building on a golf course out there. So, I’m guessing we probably won’t be in central, but maybe western!!

  7. Cal it looks like we live about 5 minutes from each other. I am just a little further down 101 by F&F on the west side of 101.

  8. Let me know when you have some free time, I would love to do it. That lake should really start up here in the next week or so depending on what this weather does. I was on the lake about a 2 week ago and she had just turned over and the fish were very lazy, I am thinking that things should start to heat up out there very soon. Shoot me a PM and lets see what we can put together.

TRY ME YOU ROUGH FISH CATCHIN’ WALLEYE WANNABE’s

  11. Again, last night we (Tuck and I) had good success with the Moon out and high using dark colors. We got on a school around 10pm and we pulled numerous (7-8) 24-27″ fish in about a 45 minute span. Wanna talk about fun ! Thanks for a great night Tuck! When the moon was out, but low in the sky, Firetiger seemed to be the bait of choice for those rascals. We got on a great schoool early in the night of 19-23″ fish that made for some good fillets and they were just smacking the Firetiger HJ 12’s. I boated a 23″ fish that ended up dieing cause she inhaled my whole HJ and nothing but the eyelet and o ring of the bait was sitcking out of her mouth . I guess she was hungry .

Man when does this bite end ! I’m a tired eye catching fool! I will be taking tonight off to rest up for the weekend and will be back out tomorrow with PoDunk Guide H20 ! Bringin a few buddies that have only experienced this craze, one time before. They are jacked after seeing everyones pics

Good Luck to everyone the rest of the week! Keep and Jon J made a good point on another post. With this cold front coming in. If you are not getting fish, slow waaaaaay down (1.2 -1.7 mph or slower). I’m seeing a lot of boats just crusiing by me right now. Crawl along and shift the boat in nuetral for a while and engage the motor and hang on to your pole . Inside turns were the ticket again last night. So thats telling me that slow is the key right now! Depths have been about 6-10 feet on the weeds edges, rocks and over the tops of some weeds also.
