Chisago Lake, Mn bass report 10-1-05

Fall usually finds me spending quite a few days on Chisago chasing bass. With the catch and release regulations that hhave been on the lake for largemoouth the size and population of these fish has continued to increase. On recent guide trips both the action and size of the bass have been pretty good. Every trip there we have boated a least 1 fish over 4lbs. I hope to keep that streak going. Our best bait has been a Berkley Frenzy Rattl’r with red craw and firetiger being the best colors to use. When working the shallower water we have been using the 1/4 oz size, and bumping up to the 1/2 oz when we go deeper. Usually I like the bigger baits better in the fall, but a slow retrieve has received better action than simply burning the baits and the 1/2 oz baits would bury in the weeds too much. We are keying on green weeds as deep as possible for the biggest fish. For the best numbers the 4-6′ range has been best. The wood hasn’t put out many fish, but the pads were real good, especially Saturday.

Spinnerbaits worked in the same areas have been our #2 bait. White with chartuse in it and copper willow leaf blades have been the best combo. These also have caught some real nice pike. Fish up to 10lbs are not uncommon. I also talked to a fellow angler that was trolling the channel and had 3 walleyes and many pike for his effort.

I love fishing both walleyes and bass. For walleyes I spend most of my time guiding on Mille Lacs. For bass I spend a ton of time on Minnetonka, but I cover most of the greater Minneapolis/St Paul Full Bio ›
