Canada Labor Day Weekend

Well, I was unable to make the annual trip this year to Canada on Labor Day weekend. This was due to helping out my Girlfriends brother, man does he owe me. Like I said, I did not make the trip yet feel like I should give a report that was given to me second hand. The report comes from two lakes that I know fairly well. These two lakes used to be fly-in lakes with a cabin on them, but now are just used as day trip lakes for an outfitter up there. We make the trip every year around Memorial Day and Labor Day. We portage back to this lake and have never saw another person on the lake. These lakes hold both Monster Pike and Walleye. As you can see the Pike my brother is holding here.

Spring is a little easier to find these large toothies and eyes, but Fall can still be some pretty awesome fishing. Spring time these pike are up shallows lurking the back bays for easy prey. This early season time of year we do a lot of casting and sight fishing for these big pike. When we go up there in the Fall, these fish are off the major breaks and usually located in around 15′ of water. Where we will tend to troll to locate the fish first and then come back and cast. My brother has pulled a 25#plus pike from this lake, with some sightings each time up there of others that are even bigger. On this 3 day fishing trip Rich and Curt pulled just over a dozen pike weighing over 10 pounds, with a lot of 5-7 lb pike coming to the boat. Here my buddy Curt is shown with another nice Toothie.

The big walleyes eluded us last Fall and this Fall would be no different for Curt and Rich. They did catch some nice eater size fish to keep them satisfied at the dinner table each day. They were lindy rigging in the 2nd lake on gravel/rock humps that would go from 15 feet up to 3 feet of water. In the past, I have had success pitching BFN plastics to the top of these humps and bringing them back down to the deeper water. There is some decent shorelines that you can troll with Rapalas and spinners that can produce some nice catches also. The main lake in the spring has been known to give up some awful large pig walleyes using slip bobbers in the evening fishing 8-10′ of water off of "King Pin" point. 2 Springs ago, "King Pin" point gave up 8 Walleye that were 28" or better and one monster 31.5" to our party of 5 boats all in one night.

Well that be it. I have only been on the water once, since my last report in early August, so I wanted to give a report of a great fishing trip that I usually take. I hope to hit the Big Pond once next weekend to start jump the Fall Full Moon trolling bite I hope everyone had a fun and safe Labor Day weekend. Until next time

Favorite thing is chasing Monster Bucks with a bow. Fishing eyes and chasing those ringnecks with my buddy Rufus is hard to beat! I fish Mille Lacs,Pool 2& Minnewawa the most. I run a Red Ranger 620 with Mercury's, Full Bio ›

  1. Too bad you missed the trip. I hope it was worth it. Do you plan on sharing the lake/resort in Canada?

  2. There is no resort on the lake and I do not remember the outfitter who uses the lake. He leaves a boat and a 10 horse on the shore. We portage our boats and the gear about a qaurter to half mile back. I have been sworn to secrecy on the lake .

My budddies Dad found it over 30 years ago and his Family has been going since. I have been going for about 7 years and my brother about 11. It is about a ten hour trip from the North side of the cities up the North Shore. Two hour drive NW of the first big city across the Canadian border

  3. Great report Rob
Don’t feel to bad about missing the trip we just might pull in one of those “large toothies” as a bonus fish on the 18th!

  4. Jason,

We troll with a variety of baits. Unlike my Walleye trolling I do not have an exact science to my Pike trolling up there. A few baits that work for us up there are. Gold or Silver Large Dr. Spoons (a lot of flash), Grim Reapers and Depth Raiders. They seem to get down a ways. How far down??? Good Question. We just cast and let out line. If we hit weeds or bottom we just bring her up a little.. Sometimes by just rasing the rod tip up. I think these active Pike will travel a distance to chase this bait, so I feel you do not have to be so precise on your depth. I hope this helps some what.

    Steve,

I hear you but that is a great trip I missed. I have had some glimpses of absolute PIGS up there. Fish Ranging from 25-35 lbs. One time I hooked a fish in my favorite back bay and was near the end of a great battle when the fish started to come to the boat, when all of a sudden directly below us in 4 feet of water was even a bigger fish???? Just watching the fish struggling on the line. The next thing you know, the bigger fish makes a swipe at the smaller fish and swims off. Now I’m thinking maybe the fish on my line was not so big. When we boated her and she measured almost 37″. I look aty my brother kind of confused and ask him how big do you think that other fish was? He kind of just shrugs his shoulders and said, “that was one big fish”. I don’t think the big fish was trying to eat the 37″er, maybe more of a aggresive territorial thing, but we guess that fish being 25-30 lbs . But your right Steve, I hope we do run into a big toothie or 10 Sunday . Just as bonus fish, like you said ! Looking forward to fishing with ya Steve !

Jeff, I could bring you there………………never mind. I would miss the Reports from the Rock River, cause my buddy mentioned something about Cement shoes for me and whoever I tell

  5. Rob, thanks for sharing that. I also missed out on our canada trip this year, it sounds almost the same as what my family does. We have been going to the same place for a number of years now, lots and lots of big pike in the spring up shallow. Wow that is a blast to see those big ones up that shallow. Thanks for sharing the report. Here is a shot of a pike I got in 3ft of water…what a trip that was

  6. Huge pike guys! WOW! Thanks for the pics.
Any of you have any reccomendations for a drive to lake that has potential for a solid early spring shallow bite for these huge gators? I have always wanted to take my Dad on a trip of a lifetime like this without spending a fortune of a Fly-in trip. I am sure there are many lakes, but I have no idea where to start looking. I would be willing to drive 8-10 hours at the most from central Mn and have a jon boat if need be for limited access..
