After struggling to boat just four small bass and two sheepies with Pro Angler Dave “Pahoo” Koonce down in the Winneshiek Wednesday morning, I stumbled across a pretty productive pattern in the rocks upstream which continues to hold even after passage of the cold front and 3″ of rain
The key to catching smallies for me the past couple days has been fishing right in the boil below wingdams where minnows are active, throwing either a firetiger DC-8 TimberTiger or a chrome/shad Rat-L-Trap parallel to the rocks in a “burning” retrieve.
The River is such that current on the rip rap above the island directly across from the northernmost boat ramp(sounds like a legal description, don’t it?!) is actually running back toward the island now. this spot produced a 19 1/2 and a 20 1/2″ SMB on consecutive casts Thursday morning on the Tiger.
Smallies a few LMB and white bass were active at the middle wingdam above Twin Island later in the day…and ever since. The Rat-L-Trap worked best for me here.
No fotos w/ this post. I was fishing alone. Nothing to prove anyway….just letting you know how and exactly where and I’ve been hooking up…won’t be back on the River for a few days, so go get ’em Tiger!
