Mississippi River Pool 9 Fishing Report 8/19/05

Today was a day to explore as much of P9 as we could. Scott Bennett and his son Jordan were looking to see as much of the pool around Lansing Ia. as they could seeing they will be spending more time here now that they have a place there.

We started out pitching Precision Jigs and plactic(Pt’s Rw’s and KG’s)in electric blue, mixed berry and oystershell.Pitching to riprap, looking for any imperfections in the shore line we could find.

We found fish in almost every spot we fished, nothing HUGE but consistant fishing non the less.Bass, Walleyes, Sheepies too….Ringworms seemed to be the ticket today over the PT’s and KG’s and they seemed to prefer the metalflake in the plastic too.

The river had come up .6 from all the rains we had the day before and i knew it was still coming up while we were out there.

The morning was cool and a little fog was in the air, but come 10am the fog had lifted and it was getting hot !!!But the fishing still didn’t pick up like I’d hoped it would..The pike I had been on were not going to cooperate at all…we worked them hard a couple of times but, with the water on the rise they move to another location and I did not find them.(sorry guys)

But in the trolling of the jointed grappler shads we did pick up a nice 18" walleye that went in the box for a good fresh walleye dinner !!! We were using St.Croix Tide Master rods that are 7’6" long with Diawa Linecounter reels..this combo is a great way to get your fish hooked up. The longer rod, makes for a good hook set with out yanking the hooks out of their mouths, and the line counter reels helps to get the crank out to the exact depth you have been finding the fish at.I think i’ll pick up a couple St.Croix Wild River Rods 9’6" long soon to add even more width to my trolling path.

thanks for a great day on the river guys

  1. Dave, Thanks for the report Bud. A mixed bag of bass and eyes is hard to beat.
