The bluegill bite on Lake Zumbro is pretty good right now so hop in your boat and get out on the water and have some fun. Nothing like a nice size gill on light tackle to put a bend in your pole making you think its a much bigger fish.
The technique used was again the simple hook, line and sinker [splitshot] under a bobber. I had too much fun last time with these gills that I just couldn’t get myself to change tactics. Plus the gills were biting very well and I also wanted to make it to the bass tourney weigh in tonight to see how the boys did.
For bait I stayed with the piece of nightcrawler on a hook which was about 5 1/2 ft. below the bobber which kept the bait in the range of being close to the bottom to several feet off the bottom. I would experiment with the depth until I located the bigger gills. That set up worked the best.
With the great weather we have been having and a good bluegill bite going its a great time to take the kids and mom fishing. We seem to get so caught up these days with all the high-tec fishing equipement and styles of fishing that we forget what its like to just hit the water and do some good o’l plain fun relaxing fishing like it was back in the good o’l days. After missing alot of fishing last year with my back really goofed up I decided that this year I was going to make up for it some. I bought a 14 ft jon boat with a little 9.9 hp motor which is perfect for basic fun fishing and cheap to use at the gas pump too. This way I can do alot of fishing between the Walleye Searchers Tournaments and my time on pool 4 on the Mississippi River. And theres LOTS of backwaters there too. Back to basics, its really fun. Give it a try.
Thanks, Bill
Nice slab gills Bill. Thanks for the report, good to see you on fish.
thanks for the report. Looks like some good eatin if you ask me. I may have to go out and try to catch a gil one of these days. Been getting crappies but they dont bend the rod like a big gil.
Thanks for the report Bill, those are nicer bluegills, and big enough to fillet too, good eating!
RHW and I got to spend a few hours out on Zumbro this afternoon. The big bluegills were very cooperative, not to mention a few white bass and a nice crappie. All fish came on mini-mites, sometimes tipped with a waxie or piece of crawler. Most of the fish came from 4-5 ft.
This is the first time I had a chance to get out for a couple months. It was a great day!
(sorry, I forgot the camera – again…)
Good Fishing,
Mike
Hi Mike, good job. Any tips for a first timer heading there with his family to catch some gills. I would apprecaite any help on where to fish them. Bill
We got them in a few places, but deep water close by was a common thread. Try some of the bays and points which have at least 15 ft. of water. You can spot the fish on a locator. They will usually be either bluegills, crappies, or white bass.
Good Fishing,
Mike
Nice gills Bill. What time is dinner?
That depends on what time you are catching them. [my livewell is empty]. 99% of the time I put everything back as I don’t eat fish. I prefer to catch them again and again and again…..
Thanks, Bill
