Mississippi River Pool 9 Pike Report 8/15/05

Today my two daughters agreed to come out and do some trolling for Northern Pike. Gettin them up at 5am was a little tricky but we were on the road and headding up to P9 early enough…

Lots of fog on the river, and that kept us close to the landing till it lifted around 10:30 am. We were trolling jointed grappler shads over 10-15 feet of water.

Surface water temp was 77 degrees in the morning and by 4pm it was up to 80deg. The best bite came well after the sun came out and was high in the sky. We were trolling anywhere from 2 to 2.8 mph on the Garmin 162. Perch and silver/chart belly were the two hottest colors today. We caught several fish in the 30" range and 4 over 36 inches with one topping out at 38"..

We lost a couple of cranks today too because these pike were taking the cranks down deep and it doesn’t take much to cut the 20 pound spiderwire stealth, so we put 24" steel leaders on and saved the rest of my cranks..

It sure is fun to get out with the kids and gettin pix like this is priceless…

  1. Sure looks like the fish changed the girls mind about fishin that day. Very nice fish. Thanks for the report and pics.
    Thanks, Bill

  2. Great report, Dave. Can hardly wait til we get out next week. Wanna show you how to lip ’em. I’m not kidding. Have a way to lip ’em without getting hurt or having fish get tangled in the net. Once the technique is learned even Deb will be able to lip ’em with no fear!

  3. Great post Dave: In a week I’ll be back in business on Pool 9. Save a few of those for me. I’ll have to talk to you about those T-shirts also. See you when I get up there.
    Jim

  4. Great post Dave. looks like you raised those girls right.
with both of them standing there holding those slimey big toothy’s I’m impressed. they even have a big smile to boot.

  5. BC, funny you should ask that…there was a boat that resembled a bass style boat that went screaming by us,in the fog, about 2 boat lengths away pumpin out a rooster tail twice as long as the boat…scared the girls pretty bad…they asked questions…they both said that that bass guy was and they would never want to do that….

so it isn’t lookin good for the bass fishing

(I told the girls that this was most likely a walleye guy in a boat like that, they didn’t believe me )

  6. Dave,
Looks like you and the girls had a great day
Sure is amazing how the fog to sun transition works not only on the fish, but the girls faces. Keep up the good work

  7. A Bass boat running wide open in fog??? No way…never happens….

2 boat lengths away…wow……I’m surprised, most Bass guys usually don’t go out of their way to give you a wide berth like that….

  8. Nice Gators Dave! You aren’t pushing those T-Shirts are you? The girls MUST have gotten money for their modeling, or maybe it was the great guide that brought the smiles to their faces????

  9. Two beautiful daughter’s, that like to fish and would never date a bass guy. You did a great job Dave

I never said it was a bass boat…I sait it resembled a bass boat….Dang Blue, you trying to get me in trouble with them bass guys or what ?

Sounds like a Bass guy…Probably some guy in a Ranger Bass boat no less. Those guys are nothing but trouble…

  12. Dave – great job getting the family out and having a good time. I did notice that it looks like you could use a larger boat… maybe something in fiberglass like a 2006 model year version…
