I had not fished the lower end of the pool since early this spring. a couple of friends were looking for some rod bending action for the day. All in all we were satisfied with the multi-species bite that materialized throughout the day.
We were one of the first boats to start working the breakline south of Lake City. As we cruised over depths of 30 ft on in, the Garmin filled with hooks! Always like to see fish on the locator before dropping a lure. Our plan was to start out running a variety of cranks to see what the hot color for the day would be. Not surprising, to keep the poles bending we had to keep switching up. No one color seemed to be hot or stay hot for very long. We pretty much went through every color of wallydiver, Rap, HotNtot we had in our boxes. To get started though, I would recommend perch and/or blue.
the best depths early in the day were from 8 to 12ft. As the day wore on, we hit fish anywhere from 14′ to fish being suspended over 30′. Flatlining, leadcore, and three ways all produced fish.
Trolling speed was the major factor for keeping the bite on. Usually 2.2 mph on up to 3mph, or faster will trigger bites this time of year. I was a little surprised that the best action today was with a trolling speed between 1.4 to 1.8mph.
For the day we ended up with about 30 eyes and sauger. A dozen or so whites, and a few crappies. If your looking for some eater size eyes and multi-species action, nows a good time to give the lower end of the pool a try. Good luck.
