On this day I had the pleasure to fish with two great kids from Big Island, Nate Mueller 11, and Robert Taylor 13. I have had Nate out before and this would be Roberts first time walleye fishing. I had talked to the boys on Wednesday and told them that I would be picking them up at 5:00 am. At 4:15 I got a call asking were I was. These boys were ready to hit the water. Here they are with the biggest fish of the day, a nice 23.5″ eye that they boated as a team. This fish was CPR.
We hit the water at 5:15am. and headed down river to a clam flat that had been producing fish for me in the past couple of weeks. When we got to the spot I showed the boys how to set up the lines. I was very impressed on how little time it took them to set all four lines. Within two minutes of our first pass we had a fish on. It was a short, but they got the idea of trolling. We made this pass a few more times with just shorts coming to the boat, so we made a move to another spot just up river. Nate and Robert started to set the lines out and before they could finish, they had a fish on. Robert had just boated his first walleye, a very healthy 19.75″er and credit goes to Nate for netting this fish. The fish went in the box and was followed by a flurry of high fives. Robert is shown here with his biggest keepers of the day. My hats off to you buddy.
All of the fish were taken on Hot-N-Tots in 9 to 12 FOW. Trolling speeds varied from spot to spot, with our most productive being 1.9 to 2.1 mph. The area these fish were holding in had a duned bottom with a very subtle current break.
Again I would like to thank Nate and Robert for sharing a great day out. These two can fish my boat anytime. I don’t know who had a better time, the boys or me? Do yourselves a favor and take a kid fishin’.
Thanks for the report and pics Tony. Just goes to show how important it is for kids to be able to get out fishing. They were so excited to fish that they wanted you there ahead of time. And look at how fast they learned. And some nice fish to boot. Its always great to see kids fishing.
Thanks, Bill
Your right about seeing the kids fishing Bill. I would have to say that out of all the trips I take out , taking the kids has to be my favorite ones.
Good job Tony
The excitement level kids bring to fishing is just great.
