Lake Minnetonka, MN bass report 7-10-05

The bass fishing is starting to really heat up on Minneonka. In the last Wednesday night tournament we had 16+lbs on our 5 fish, and did NOT get a check. It took over 21 to win. The largemouth are begining to school up in the thick milfoil nicely. These hot sunny days are perfect conditions to warm the water under the milfoil. Most fish are coming in 12′ on various baits. This first one my wife caught on a Txeas rigged 4 1/2" Flippin’ Tube from Outkast Tackle.

This second fish came on black/blue Pro Staff jig. On these nice days 3 to 6 fish have been common per spot. The fish are very thick and healthy. I had one spit up two 4" perch while unhooking it.

When the wind picks up or it is cloudy or rainy, look for those fish to pull to the outside weed edges and the rocks. There are more fish showing up there each day. Carolina rigs or Touchdown jigs with a Spider Grub are working well on the rocks. Jigs, Texas rigs and jig worms are working on the weed edges.

There are still fish on the inside weed lines, but while the numbers may be there, the size is really lacking. The exception would be certain stretches of docks have spit some nice fish. Look for docks without a lot of weed close by to hold the bigger fish right now. Good luck on the water.

I love fishing both walleyes and bass. For walleyes I spend most of my time guiding on Mille Lacs. For bass I spend a ton of time on Minnetonka, but I cover most of the greater Minneapolis/St Paul Full Bio ›

  1. Mike,

Have to agree with everything you said pretty much except on Weds night we found some huge schools of big fish. We had 11 bites in the first 45 minutes at the first spot, losing 5, and weighed 18.5# for 4th and had 2nd biggest fish a 5.9. Was some fast fishing with the 5.9 followed on the very next cast by a 4.8, now if the pattern and the spots will only hold up for the Fishers of Men next Saturday. I tried to attach a pic of the two biggest fish but it would not open.

  2. Thanks for the update guys. I was wondering if you have been finding them on the more isolated patches of milfoil or in the more expansive stuff?

  3. Capn,

Good to hear you found some bigger schools of big fish. The bigger schools that we’ve found were 2.5-3lbers, with the smaller schools holding the 4+lb fish. I’ll need to look for you out there next time. Good luck on the Fishers. I’ll be sitting it out to fish Lake Michigan instead.

    Goose,
There are a million good milfoil areas, they ere just hard to find. They can be on both huge flats as well as the small patches. Its a matter of trial and error. Sorry I can’t help nail it down for you.

  4. Minnetonka can be frustrating at times. You will fish for hours without catching a decent bass. Then on the next 10 casts you will catch a good one every cast. It is unbelievable how many big fish are out in that lake. If you look at tourneys across the country I don’t know if there are any lakes that give up both the numbers and average winning weights.

  5. Just going to add an update for those of you planning to fish on sat in the Fishers of Men tournament. The fish are still going crazy in the milfoil. In the 4.5 hours we were on the lake all of the fish we caught but 1 were over 3lbs, up to 4.75lbs. And this was a guide trip with 2 anglers new to Tonka! After 10 minutes on the water, 3 fish, 11 lbs. Limit after 1 hour 28.5 lbs on 8 fish. Upgrade there after. Same baits as before. It was real nice not having any other bass boats out there. This off limits thing works good for me. Good luck to all as I’ll be on Lake Michigan!

  6. This pattern should hold for the rest of the summer… It’s just locating the toads and loading up on them, eh…
