Spent last week on the English below Lac Seul at Ear Falls. The fishing was absolutely phenominal. Had a dozen walleyes between 27″ and 28.5″. Hundreds of 24″ to 26″ and the key was plastics. We saw many of the boats using live bait and they were catching fish, but mostly small ones. We were keying on fish in the dead water between strong current areas. They were laying on the front side of humps just waiting for a meal to come by. Most fish were caught in 22-28 fow. 5/8 oz precision jigs with rings worms in brown/orange, purple/white, and paddle tails in purple/white, and blue/white. These walleyes were just thumping these jigs and most of the time the jig was completely engulfed inside the walleyes mouth. This was one of the most enjoyable trips I have ever taken as the quantity and quality of fish was exceptional. I will post pictures when I get them down loaded.
Sounds like a blast. The only time I have been to Canada was to the English river out of Ear Falls. Would love to get back there. My river fishing skills where almost none on that visit and would love to get back there with what i know about the river and walleye fishing know. Where di you guys stay up there?
Steve;
What camp did you stay at???
I took my father up there 4 years ago to Naughty Pines Fish Camp. We had a great time and caught tons of good fish!!!
Hey,
Next week a group of my friends and i are fishing the English River off of hwy. 599 just out of Ignace. I was wondering just how far you are from there, so i know if these techniques will apply in this same area. I have never really fished much on the river, i normally do the majority of my fishing in lake areas, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. I’m so glad to hear that the fish are biting hard, hopefully they still will be next week!!!
Thanks a bunch for any information
Naughty pines is where we stayed also. Would love to get back up there.
Mike;
Did you hear it burned down last year!!!
He had a fire in one of the cabins and it basically wiped out the whole joint!
When I talked to him last fall, he was in the process of rebuilding.
Naughty Pines is just below the Manitou Falls dam. We stayed just above the Manitou Falls Dam on Camping Lake at JR’s Portage Bay Lodge. The run to the Ear Falls Dam is about 15 miles, Pacwash is about 7 miles. We have fished below the Manitou Falls Dam and yes the same presentations work there. Very similar to fishing the Mississippi. Key on wingdam type structure, points with good current, etc.
We were on Camping Lake just above Manitou Falls Dam. Naughty Pines is just below the Manitou Falls Dam. We had seen the heavy black smoke and heard that the whole camp had burned down. We had a number of guys come over and stay in our camp as there were vacancies. Sure was a nice camp. We went down and took a look and it pretty much burned everything right down to the ground. What a shame.
JUST COME BACK FROM THE IGNACE ONTARIO REGION. WHAT A BLAST!! BEEN GOING THERE FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS WITH THE SAME BUNCH. MY BOY HAS A GREAT TIME AND TOOK HIS FIRST TRIP OUT WITHOUT DAD THIS YEAR AND CLEANED HOUSE. FISHING WAS GREAT AND SO WAS THE WEATHER. WE HAD ONE RAINY DAY [THURSDAY]. OUR LARGEST WALLEYE WAS 26 1/2” NORTHERN WAS 35” AND 18” SMALLEY. WE FISHED HEATHWALT, FLATROCK, BARREL & KUKASKUS

Hello all i just got back from Ignace also but we stayed at Press Lake camp> Fishing was alright , the biggest fish we caught was 25 inch walleye many 14-16 inchers, 16 inch smallmouth and 33 inch northern, the fish did bite on ringworms and paddletails but leeches and worms did the best for us. Press lake is a pretty lake but i was not impressed with the fishing It was a 12 hour drive from where i live to long for me
Till another time
FISH ON
Just got home from two days on the English River after two totally unsuccessful days at Lake Vermillion, Minn. (the dead sea). The two of us caught several hundred walleye average about 17″ largest 24″ and very few small (less than 10″). Only bait used was thawed frozen minnows on the bottom. The conditions were 25c and 27c and full sun. Most were caught during chop. When the wind died down so did bites. A great two days.
brad kansas, where on the river were you? were you anywhere neer barrel lake or hwy. 599?
