Its finally Bassin time in my neck O the woods…I had the pleasure of fishing with my long time friend Jim Hagel of Holland, Mi and his son Scott, who resides in the Chicagoland area and works in the Bear Football org. (GO BEARS). We had to deal with some scorching temps and high winds…not to mention the big spawners have left the beds for deep water and in the hands of the smaller males…This nice Smallie nailed an 1/8th oz Terminator Spinnerbait inside a weedline break…
We started out on the Menominee River near Niagara, WI. The river here is fairly similar to the upper Mississippi(w/o wingdams unfortunately) but with good current and lots of backwater sloughs. Besides Bass there are Pike, Musky, and good panfish. The 25-30 mph winds made boat control nearly impossible but as we drifted under the US-2 bridge I flipped my white spinnerbait alongside a fallen willow tree and another nice 19 incher…twin to my first one…engulfed it.
The 97 degree noon sun drove us off the water. We retreated to an air conditioned restaraunt for a long lunch. I decided to try another location and we headed north to the Michigamme reservior. I was counting on the deeper…cooler water to improve the bite. We worked the steeper rocky shorelines with plastics and tubes. I marked fish holding on the secondary break at 14-18 ft. My first cast with a FinTech Title Shot jig and Zoom smoke/red flake tube was inhaled immediately by a chunky 16″ post spawn big mouth.
Jim and Scott opted to stay on top and caught numerous 12-14″ males. I decided to keep working the Title Shot jig and managed another nice Largemouth, this time a little bigger. I noticed the weedlines growing in fast and thick. The next few weeks should put us into the prime summer pattern. Shallow feeding in low light and inside weedline and deeper contour breaks during the day.
So GET OUT AND GET FISHING!
Thanks for the report Tommy. Great to see you having fun on the water.
Keep catchin em.
