Mississippi River Pool 4 Bass June 17

Heees baaack! Some of you may remember a report I did last summer about fishing with a lad named Mike Anderson (walleyeboy). Mike is Greg VandeMark’s (Reefrunner) nephew and spends the summers with Greg in Wabasha. Well a few things have changed, Mike has grown a lot and I would have to re-classify him as a pleasant young man. Mike Starts high school this fall and a driver’s license can’t be far away. Mike is a fishing nut and you can find him on the water every day the weather permits. There isn’t a fish that’s safe within bicycle distance of Wabasha. Mike and I had the chance to chase some bass on Friday and did ok. The water is high and off colored in most areas of the pool. The fish weren’t everywhere but when you found them they cooperated. The photo is a largemouth Mike caught off a grass edge on a current break. We took close to 10 fish from the area in a couple of stops.

The pattern for the day related to grass and current on either rock or sand. Most of the schools were mixed large and smallmouth. However the largies dominated. The fish mike is holding came out of very fast current in a run that has lots of submerged vegetation.

We had two presentations that did most of the damage. The Yum Megatube in green pumpkin with copper flake took most of the fish in the current breaks but swimming a jig worked best over vegetation in the current. This smallie jumped all over a tube-bait.

We unsuccessfully fished several sand breaks looking for some smallies but we did come across a school of walleyes. Mike is holding a 19-20” fish that came out of 4” of water just off the drop. We took 8 or 9 fish from the spot and about half were legal length. The fish came on a 5” clear with silver flake K-Tail. What would you expect from a guy who’s screen name is walleyeboy. I’m trying hard to convert him but I can’t get him away from the “Dark Side”. I have to add Mike is developing lots of skills and has mastered bait-casting gear and is deadly accurate with his casts. All I can say is look out fish!

  5. Thanks for the report. Yes that little Bud is a good stick no matter what the species of fish. Greg has taught him well and I know he fishes every chance he gets.
    Thanks, Bill

  6. Randy, Randy, Randy, do detect a little paranoia? Could it be you know bass fishing is more fun?
Besides, everyone deserves a little “bass” fishing on the side.

  7. Thanks for taking me fishing it was a blast!!
If you are ever down and need a partner i love to go fishing with you!!!
    Thanks alot
    Mike

  8. Hey John… A big thanks for taking Mike..he loves to fish..I don’t know what is up with this Ranger boat stuff though.. he thinks I should get a ranger boat..ha ha
One other thing I now have buzz baits, spinner baits, tubes, jig and pigs, all this strange stuff hanging from the sides of my walleye boat. What is a guy to do.

Hey Randy you better watch out Mike is really good with his new bait casters. And can land his buzzbait right on target…When those smallmouth blast the bait look out even a walleye guy has to smile…

I think we will have to go fish for some walleye’s this weekend. I have been catching too many grass carp the last week.

Again Thanks alot John..Mike has become an excellent angler the last couple years and thanks for your help and friendship teaching him.
